Critical Recognition
- 91 - 94 Points (Outstanding) - Allen Meadows (Burghound): A ripe but attractively airy nose offers up notes of black raspberry, violet and anise. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy to the delicious and more mineral-driven flavors that are a mix of power and refinement and particularly so on the moderately austere and more tightly wound finale. Very fine quality here in a built-to-age package.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir sourced from "Les Rugiens Hauts," universally regarded as Pommard's finest Premier Cru terroir and frequently championed for Grand Cru classification.
- Perched on the upper slope with iron-rich red-clay soils over hard Bathonian limestone, imparting Rugiens' signature ferrous minerality, commanding depth, and exceptional aging potential.
- Crafted by Domaine Glantenay, utilizing gentle extraction and thoughtful whole-cluster vinification to preserve elegant floral nuances amidst Rugiens' structural power.
- Aged for approximately 16 to 18 months in select French oak barrels (around 30–35% new oak) to sculpt and polish the dense tannic core.
- From the historic, concentrated, and fresh 2020 vintage; displays breathtaking energy and dry extract with the stamina to develop effortlessly through 2040+.
Tasting Notes
Deep, opaque ruby with dark purple reflections, it reveals an intense, complex bouquet of dark black cherries, poached plums, and wild blackberries, underpinned by crushed stone, dried violets, iron shavings, and subtle exotic spices. The palate is medium to full-bodied, dense, and commanding, delivering concentrated dark berry fruit supported by muscular yet fine-grained tannins and vibrant limestone acidity, concluding on a broad, savory, and mineral-saturated finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 15–17°C in generous Pinot Noir stemware.
- Decanting: Highly recommended to decant for 45 to 60 minutes prior to serving to allow its muscular tannins and iron minerality to soften and blossom; pairs brilliantly with prime rib of beef, roasted venison, wild boar ragout, or aged Époisses. Optimal drinking window now through 2040+.
