Critical Recognition
- 90 - 92 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): Mid crimson. The nose is friendly in the style of upper Rugiens rather than the greater opulence and depth of the lower part. Opens out quite well on the palate with a good juiciness and some additional persistence. The finish is harmonious with tannins and acidity fully integrated in the fruit. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Oct 2022 by Jasper Morris MW.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir sourced from "Les Rugiens Hauts," universally recognized as the pinnacle Premier Cru terroir of Pommard and historically championed for Grand Cru classification.
- Perched on the upper slope with iron-rich reddish clay over hard Bathonian limestone, imparting Rugiens' signature ferrous minerality, high-toned perfume, and chiseled structural backbone.
- Crafted by Domaine Glantenay, employing gentle handling, restrained extraction, and meticulous elevage to accentuate the site's natural tension and aromatic elegance.
- Aged for approximately 16 to 18 months in select French oak barrels (around 30% new oak) to gently refine the tannins while preserving pure red-fruited energy.
- From the classically fresh, cool-toned 2021 Burgundy harvest; displays breathtaking transparency and precision today with the architecture to cellar gracefully through 2036+.
Tasting Notes
Bright, translucent ruby with violet highlights, it opens with an incisive bouquet of wild red cherries, pomegranate, and redcurrant, underscored by crushed rock, dried rose petals, iron shavings, and subtle toasted spices. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, linear, and tensile, balancing vibrant red fruit across a chassis of chalky, fine-grained tannins and energetic limestone acidity, concluding on a long, mouth-watering, and intensely saline finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 15–17°C in generous Pinot Noir stemware.
- Decanting: Best enjoyed with 30 to 45 minutes of aeration in the decanter or glass to allow its tight mineral core, wild berries, and floral perfume to fully expand; pairs beautifully with roasted squab, milk-fed veal, duck breast with cranberry jus, or mild semi-firm cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2036+.
