Critical Recognition
- 91 - 94 Points (Sweet spot Outstanding) - Allen Meadows (Burghound): An exuberantly floral-suffused nose blends notes of red and dark berries with those of spice and a whiff of wet stone. There is better density and verve to the beautifully textured and overtly mineral-driven larger-bodied flavors that deliver superb length on the precise, youthfully austere and balanced finale. As with all quality versions of Rugiens, this will need at least some cellaring and 10 to 12 years would be ideal.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir sourced from "Les Rugiens Hauts," universally recognized as Pommard's finest Premier Cru climat and widely regarded as possessing Grand Cru pedigree.
- Situated on the steep upper slope where iron-rich reddish clay lies over hard Bathonian limestone, giving Rugiens Hauts its signature ferrous minerality, high-toned aromatic lift, and imposing structure.
- Crafted by Domaine Glantenay, employing gentle vinification, parcel-by-parcel precision, and patient barrel elevage to preserve floral finesse within an inherently muscular frame.
- Aged for approximately 16 to 18 months in select French oak barrels (around 30–35% new oak) to soften and integrate the dense tannic core.
- From the warm, concentrated, and harmonious 2022 Burgundy harvest; delivers remarkable fruit opulence today alongside the balance and extract to age effortlessly through 2038+.
Tasting Notes
Deep, saturated ruby with violet reflections, it opens with a complex, brooding bouquet of ripe black cherries, dark plum, and wild blackberries, underpinned by crushed stone, dried roses, iron shavings, and subtle sweet baking spices. The palate is full-bodied, dense, and commanding, delivering concentrated dark berry fruit supported by muscular yet powdery, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity, concluding on a broad, savory, and mineral-saturated finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 15–17°C in generous Burgundy stemware.
- Decanting: Highly recommended to decant for 45 to 60 minutes prior to serving to allow its muscular tannins and iron minerality to soften and blossom; pairs brilliantly with prime rib of beef, roasted venison, wild boar ragout, or aged Époisses. Optimal drinking window now through 2038+.
