Dark Red Cherries, Violets, Silky Tannins, and Santenots Depth

The 2021 Domaine Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru "Les Santenots" is an elegant, richly textured Pinot Noir hailing from one of the most famous climats on the border of Volnay and Meursault. It reveals fragrant aromas of dark red cherries, wild raspberries, crushed violets, and sweet spice. Medium-bodied and supple, it blends rich red fruit with powdery, fine tannins and vibrant limestone acidity, finishing long, seamless, and finely mineral.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris MW 88 - 90 pts
  • 88 - 90 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): Theirs is quite a limestone laden plot, but with good depth of soil, ripens well. A similar crimson purple colour. Quite dense on the palate with slightly firmer tannins, no more than medium weight, with fair length. Overall a drier finish perhaps. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted Oct 2022 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from "Les Santenots," an iconic Premier Cru terroir legally located in Meursault but entitled to the Volnay-Santenots appellation for red wines.
  • Planted on deep, reddish-brown clay-limestone soils over hard Bathonian limestone, which imparts Santenots' characteristic textural richness, darker fruit character, and supple structure.
  • Crafted by Domaine Glantenay, the celebrated Volnay-based family domaine using gentle extractions and traditional cellar techniques to bring out site-specific nuance.
  • Matured for approximately 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels (around 25–30% new oak) to gently refine the tannins while preserving pure red and dark berry aromatics.
  • From the classically fresh and tensile 2021 Burgundy harvest; displays radiant fruit and floral perfume today alongside the balance to cellar gracefully through 2035+.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby with purple tints, it opens with pure, lifted aromas of dark cherries, wild raspberries, and cranberries, underscored by dried violet petals, forest floor, and a faint hint of sweet baking spice. The palate is medium-bodied, supple, and seamless, delivering juicy red fruit over fine, powdery tannins and vibrant acidity, finishing long, clean, and chalky-mineral.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 14–16°C in generous Pinot Noir stemware.
  • Decanting: Best enjoyed with 20 to 30 minutes of gentle aeration in the glass to allow its floral aromatics and red fruit core to unfurl; pairs beautifully with roasted duck, grilled squab, veal chops with chanterelles, or semi-firm cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2035+.
