Critical Recognition
- 88 - 90 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): Here the wood treatment is a bit more evident though still subtle as the more floral-suffused aromas of mostly various red berries and spice are easily appreciated. The old vines show as there is better mid-palate density to the middle weight flavors that conclude in an overtly stony, dusty and slightly more structured finale. This is also a bit rustic and a wine that needs a few years in order to develop better depth.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir harvested from four historic parcels of old vines averaging 60+ years across the slope of Volnay, delivering heightened concentration and natural dry extract.
- Grown on classic Jurassic limestone and clay soils that contribute to Volnay’s signature floral aromatic lift, fine tannins, and vibrant minerality.
- Crafted by Domaine Glantenay, the celebrated Volnay family estate applying gentle extraction and meticulous elevage to capture transparent village typicity.
- Aged for approximately 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels (around 20–25% new oak) to gently polish the tannins while preserving pure red fruit definition.
- From the balanced, expressive 2023 Burgundy harvest; offers enticing approachability in its youth while possessing the density to age comfortably through 2033+.
Tasting Notes
Bright, translucent ruby with violet reflections, it opens with an alluring bouquet of wild strawberries, fresh red cherries, and raspberries, underscored by crushed violets, dried rose petals, and subtle baking spices. The palate is medium-bodied, supple, and seamless, presenting juicy red fruit over fine-grained, powdery tannins and fresh limestone acidity, concluding on a clean, lingering, and chalky-mineral finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 14–16°C in generous Pinot Noir stemware.
- Decanting: Best enjoyed with 20 to 30 minutes of gentle aeration in the glass to allow its floral perfume and red berry core to unfurl; pairs excellently with roasted duck breast, veal tenderloin, grilled quail, or mild semi-firm cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2033+.
