Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Burghound 93 pts
- 93 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): Moderate wood is present on the spicy, fresh and ripe black pinot fruit aromas that are trimmed in warm earth wisps. The wood also appears on the palate of the larger-scaled flavors that are not quite as concentrated before terminating in a compact, firm, powerful and impressively long finish. This is on the woodier side stylistically but it's not over the top.
- The Hallowed Terroir of Charmes-Chambertin: Domaine Humbert's parcel lies within the prestigious *Mazoyères* sector of Charmes-Chambertin, where deep, iron-rich limestone soils mixed with clay topsoil give the Pinot Noir a broader, more muscular structure than the airier upper plots. This unique terroir combines the famed floral charm of the appellation with the powerful, wild, and savory undertones characteristic of Gevrey-Chambertin.
- The Humbert Frères Flagship Craft: Brothers Emmanuel and Frédéric Humbert farm their old vines in Charmes-Chambertin with strict, low-yield precision. In the cellar, careful pre-fermentation cold maceration extracts deep color and aromatics, followed by traditional aging in top-tier French oak barrels. The result is a monumental Grand Cru that promises exceptional evolution over decades in the cellar.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir estate-harvested from old Grand Cru vines in Charmes-Chambertin.
- A powerfully built, highly concentrated 2020 Grand Cru designed for long-term cellar maturation.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, dark ruby-purple core with vibrant violet highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Rich, complex, and dark-fruited. It opens with sweet aromas of ripe black cherries, wild dark currants, and poached plums, underlaid with spicy wood, warm earth, game, and subtle forest floor notes.
- Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and deeply concentrated. The entry floods the mouth with intense dark berry sap, supported by firm, fine-grained Grand Cru tannins. A vibrant line of acidity balances the vintage's rich solar warmth, leading into a long, muscular, and wood-framed finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–16°C. A gentle cellar-like chill focuses the deep dark fruit and balances the oak structure.
- Decanting: A 60-to-90 minute decant is strongly recommended if opening young to allow the firm tannins and oak to open up. Built to cellar gracefully over the next 15 to 20+ years.
- Western Pairing: Slow-roasted duck breast, pan-seared venison fillets, roasted rack of lamb, wild boar ragù, or rich beef Bourguignon.
- Asian Pairing: Peking duck with plum sauce, braised beef brisket, Cantonese barbecued pork (Char Siu), or wok-fried beef with black pepper.
