Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
Robert Parker 93 pts
James Suckling 96 pts
- 93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2024 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese is clear and precise yet still discreet on the somewhat muted yet fresh and promising nose that is most of all savory and flinty. Finely racy on the first attack, this is a savory and zesty, finely grippy and juicy Spätlese with a mouth-filling, grippy, nicely lemon-bitter and energetic finish. This is very promising. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in October 2025.
- 96 Points - James Suckling: The passion fruit, mangosteen and wild strawberry aromas of this vibrant wine are divine. Extremely dynamic and brilliant on the sleek, barely medium-bodied palate. What beautiful zestiness in the very long, vibrant finish. Drink from release.
- The Iconic Red Slate of Ürziger Würzgarten: Meaning "the spice garden of Ürzig," this famous vineyard features uniquely red, iron-rich volcanic slate soil mixed with weathered clay. The heat-retaining steep amphitheater yields Rieslings with distinctive exotic spice, herbal undertones, and juicy red berry flavors found nowhere else in the Mosel.
- Centuries of Winemaking Tradition at Dr. Loosen: Owned by Ernst Loosen, the Dr. Loosen estate has been in the family for over 200 years. Managing ungrafted old vines on steep slopes, the estate stops fermentation naturally to preserve pristine natural sweetness balanced by high-elevation acidity.
Highlights
- 100% Riesling harvested from ungrafted old vines in the Grand Cru Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard.
- A radiant 2024 Spätlese combining ripe fruit sweetness with electric volcanic slate acidity.
- Crafted by Ernst Loosen, one of the Mosel Valley's most world-renowned Riesling producers.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Brilliant pale gold with luminous green-yellow highlights.
- Nose: Intensely spicy and aromatic. It opens with luscious aromas of white peach, pink grapefruit, and wild strawberry, accompanied by notes of sweet cardamom, lemongrass, and crushed red slate.
- Palate: Fruity-sweet, light-bodied, and remarkably energetic. The entry brings a rich wave of tropical stone fruit and berry sap that is immediately lifted by electric natural acidity, concluding in a long, mouth-watering, and salty mineral finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C to focus its lively acidity and balance the natural sweetness.
- Decanting: No decanting necessary; best enjoyed straight from the bottle. Possesses extraordinary cellaring potential over 20 to 30+ years.
- Western Pairing: Foie gras, spicy roast pork with apple sauce, blue cheese (Roquefort, Gorgonzola), or fruit tarts.
- Asian Pairing: Spicy Thai green curry, Sichuan stir-fried chicken with chilies, Indian curry dishes, or Peking duck with plum sauce.
