SOIL / TERROIR
Weathering soils of the Buntsandstein - approx. 250 million years old
The Buntsandstein is the predominant geological formation in the Palatinate Forest. It has been used as a building material for centuries. Like the red slate, the Buntsandstein was deposited in desert-like areas under a hot climate. Constant sea incursions and changes between shallow sea and flatland are characteristic. The red sandstone owes its yellow to deep red color to changing iron oxide levels. -
