The 2021 Ca'Marcanda Camarcanda is the flagship red from Angelo Gaja’s coastal Tuscan estate in Bolgheri. A masterclass in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it showcases dark cassis, wild Mediterranean herbs, espresso, and graphite. Full-bodied yet remarkably poised, it marries concentrated dark fruit with fine-grained, architectural tannins and vibrant freshness into a magnificent, long-lived finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 97 pts
James Suckling 94 pts
  • 97 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The Ca' Marcanda 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda is made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in a supporting role. This a bold and beautifully concentrated wine with a brilliant character that is best described as Rubenesque. It shows supple texture and deep richness supported by sweet fruit and raspberry tart. The ripe, well-managed tannins cede to tingling freshness that adds energy and life.
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: A savory and juicy young red with currant, raspberry and boysenberry aromas and flavors that follow through to a medium to full body, with creamy and polished tannins and a pretty finish. There’s a freshness and focus to this. Drink after 2027.
  • Bolgheri White Soils ("Terre Bianche"): Crafted exclusively from vineyards planted on calcareous clay and limestone-rich soils known as *terre bianche*. This distinct terroir produces a wine with refined structural power, precise tannins, and remarkable aging capacity.
  • Gaja's Tuscan Icon: Founded by Angelo Gaja in 1996, Ca'Marcanda embodies the Gaja family's uncompromising quest for finesse. Camarcanda is their signature cuvée—blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc—aged meticulously in French barriques followed by larger neutral oak casks.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-purple in color, it opens with commanding aromas of ripe cassis, black cherries, graphite, and dried Mediterranean herbs, framed by hints of dark cocoa and cedar. On the palate, it is full-bodied and sculpted, wrapping concentrated dark berry fruit around a core of architectural, fine-grained tannins and mineral-driven acidity, culminating in an exceptionally long, savory, and refined finish.
