Critical Recognition
- 93 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has turned out well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, smoked meats, cherries, orange rind, warm spices and framboise. Full-bodied, rich and muscular, its ample core of fruit largely concealing ripe but youthfully chalky tannins, this is a powerful, lusty Clos Saint-Denis that possesses plenty of character, even if it isn't the most elegant Jouan has produced in recent years.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir harvested from a tiny, prized holding of old vines within Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, long regarded as the most feminine, floral, and aromatic Grand Cru of Morey-Saint-Denis.
- Grown on gentle mid-slope brown limestone and clay soils laced with fine Jurassic scree, imparting Clos Saint-Denis' trademark rose-petal perfume and refined mineral drive.
- Crafted by Domaine Henri Jouan (under Philippe Jouan), a venerated, discreet family estate celebrated for artisanal, low-intervention vinification and gentle extractions.
- Matured for approximately 18 months in select French oak barrels with restrained new wood (~20–25%), allowing the Grand Cru vineyard’s delicate nuances to take center stage.
- From the warm, concentrated, and richly textured 2018 Burgundy harvest; offers seductive early charm alongside the inherent balance and depth to cellar through 2038+.
Tasting Notes
Luminous ruby with garnet reflections, it reveals an intoxicating bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and spiced plums, interwoven with crushed peonies, dried rose petals, raw cocoa, and gentle forest floor. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, supple, and seamless, marrying a succulent core of fruit with powdery, cashmere-like tannins and balanced freshness, concluding on a persistent, delicately spiced, and chalky-mineral finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 15–17°C in generous Burgundy balloon stemware.
- Decanting: Best enjoyed with 30 to 45 minutes of gentle aeration in the glass to allow its complex floral perfume and savory spice notes to fully open; pairs magnificently with roasted squab, rack of lamb, pan-seared duck breast with cherry reduction, or aged Époisses. Optimal drinking window now through 2038+.
