Critical Recognition
- 90 - 92 Points - William Kelley (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): Bursting from the glass with aromas of blackberries, smoked meats, licorice and cassis, the 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé is medium to full-bodied, rich and nicely concentrated, built around powdery tannins and concluding with a long, sapid finish. Ripe and heady, I don't think this will match the 2017, 2016 or 2015 renditions, but it's a nice wine.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir harvested from a parcel of old vines averaging over 60 years in "Clos Sorbè," a walled, south-facing Premier Cru situated on the mid-slope of Morey-Saint-Denis bordering Chambolle-Musigny.
- Planted on limestone and fine pebbly clay soils that give Clos Sorbè its distinctive Chambolle-like floral lift, supple texture, and refined mineral spine.
- Crafted by Domaine Henri Jouan (under Philippe Jouan), an artisanal family domaine renowned for delicate handling, partial whole-cluster vinification, and low-extraction cellar methods.
- Matured for approximately 18 months in select French oak barrels with minimal new wood (~15–20%) to preserve pure aromatic precision and nuanced terroir typicity.
- From the warm, expressive 2018 Burgundy harvest; displays inviting, generous fruit in its youth while possessing the balance and structure to cellar comfortably through 2035+.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby with warm garnet reflections, it reveals an inviting, seductive bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and spiced plums, interwoven with dried rose petals, crushed violets, a hint of raw cocoa, and sweet forest floor. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, velvety, and seamlessly balanced, framing sweet red fruit with fine, powdery tannins and fresh acidity, concluding on a persistent, delicately spiced, and chalky-mineral finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 15–17°C in Burgundy balloon stemware.
- Decanting: Best enjoyed with 25 to 30 minutes of gentle aeration in the glass to allow its floral aromatics and red berry core to open; pairs wonderfully with roasted pigeon or duck breast, milk-fed veal chops, pan-seared quail, or soft semi-firm cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2035+.
