Crisp Green Apples, Brioche, Chalky Laser Cut, and Benchmark 2008 Grand Cru Majesty

The 2008 Champagne Henriot "Cuvée Hemera" Brut is an electric, monumental prestige cuvée from a historic, once-in-a-generation Champagne vintage. Sourced exclusively from six founding Grand Cru terroirs and aged for over a decade on the lees, it reveals chiseled aromas of Meyer lemon, green orchard fruit, toasted brioche, and crushed chalk. Medium-to-full-bodied and razor-sharp, it pairs vibrant energy with a silken bead and immense saline drive, finishing with profound aristocratic tension.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 92+ pts
James Suckling 95 pts
  • 92+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: A blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, the 2008 Brut Cuvée Hemera has a lively first nose of candied lemon and hints of lime and smoke, with aromas of quince, apple and spring flowers. With aeration, notes of almonds and almond flowers come to the fore. On the palate, there is a nervy tension that energizes its fine, crystalline texture. This is an upright and elegant Champagne with a mouthwateringly long, airy finish. After some time in the glass, it evolves toward notes of smoke, flint, chalk and vanilla. It will drink at its peak in three years.
  • 95 Points - James Suckling: Dried flowers, dusty chalk, hazelnuts, hints of licorice, white pepper, dried apples and dried pineapples on the nose, with underlying Meyer lemon character. Sleek and elegant, with very fine bubbles and a zesty and vibrant finish. 50% each chardonnay and pinot noir from the six founding crus. 5g/L dosage. Disgorged November 2022. Drink or hold.
  • The Six Founding Grand Crus: Continuing the prestige mantle of Cuvée des Enchanteleurs, Hemera 2008 is an exacting 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir harvested solely from the six historic Grand Cru villages of the maison: Avize, Chouilly, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the Côte des Blancs, together with Mailly, Verzy, and Verzenay on the Montagne de Reims.
  • The Legendary 2008 Vintage & Crayères Maturation: 2008 is celebrated across Champagne for its cool growing season and extraordinary balance of phenolic ripeness and surging natural acidity. Aged for more than 12 years on the fine lees in Henriot’s subterranean Roman chalk cellars (*crayères*), this cuvée possesses the structure, tension, and autolytic stamina to evolve effortlessly for decades.

Highlights

  • Equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from six historical Grand Cru terroirs.
  • Aged over 12 years sur lattes in Henriot's historic underground Gallo-Roman chalk cellars.
  • A benchmark release from the legendary 2008 vintage; built for longevity through 2045+.

Tasting Notes

Luminous pale gold with shimmering silver highlights and a persistent, ultrafine bead, it opens with pure, chiseled aromas of Meyer lemon, green apple, and white peach, intertwined with notes of toasted brioche, blanched almonds, crushed chalk, and dried white flowers. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, taut, and vibrating with nervous energy, carrying concentrated citrus and orchard fruit over a silky autolytic mousse and a spine of razor-sharp acidity, concluding on a soaring, persistent, and intensely saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 10–12°C in a wide tulip or standard white wine glass to allow the high-tension aromatics room to expand.
  • Decanting: Decanting is not necessary, but 10 to 15 minutes of glass aeration softens its taut acidity and allows its layered autolytic depth to sing. Prime drinking window extends through 2045+.
