Wild Raspberries, Crushed Peonies, Silky Tannins, and Les Crais Salinity

The 2023 Jane Eyre Auxey-Duresses "Les Crais" Rouge is a buoyant, charming Pinot Noir highlighting classical Côte de Beaune transparency. It displays enticing aromas of wild raspberries, crunchy red cherries, crushed peonies, and stony earth. Medium-bodied and feather-light on its feet, it weaves succulent red fruit with powdery, fine tannins and vibrant limestone acidity, finishing clean, savory, and refreshingly saline.

Critical Recognition

Jasper Morris MW 89 pts
  • 89 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): Five barrels made, the same volume and source as 2022. Less whole bunch than in 2022, just 10-15%. A pretty if lighter colour. Even so, a very pretty bouquet. Gets the nod this year, as there is more stuffing through the middle. A light touch from the barrel to finish, and with very good length. Drink from 2026-2029. Tasted Dec 2024 by Jasper Morris MW.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir harvested from "Les Crais," a benchmark lieu-dit in Auxey-Duresses characterized by stony, chalky limestone soils that provide superior drainage.
  • Sourced from shallow clay-limestone soils strewn with small white limestone pebbles (crais), delivering tension, aromatic floral lift, and an unmistakable saline finish.
  • Crafted by Australian-born micro-négociant Jane Eyre, utilizing minimal extraction, indigenous yeasts, and partial whole clusters to preserve red fruit purity and terroir precision.
  • Aged for approximately 12 to 14 months in fine French oak barrels with restrained new wood (~15–20%) to build texture without masking delicate aromatics.
  • From the classically proportioned, generous, and fresh 2023 Burgundy vintage; combines radiant fruit charm with vibrant acidity, drinking wonderfully now through 2033+.

Tasting Notes

Bright, translucent ruby with crimson highlights, it opens with a perfumed, expressive bouquet of wild raspberries, red cherries, and cranberries, interwoven with crushed peonies, rose petals, white pepper, and damp chalky earth. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, linear, and supple, delivering crunchy red berry fruit over fine, melting tannins and vibrant limestone acidity, finishing clean, mouth-watering, and with delicate salinity.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve cellar-cool at 14–16°C in Burgundy balloon stemware.
  • Decanting: Best enjoyed with 15 to 20 minutes of gentle aeration in the glass to allow its bright fruit and floral perfume to expand; pairs deliciously with roast chicken with fresh tarragon, duck rillettes, grilled quail, or mild semi-firm cheeses. Optimal drinking window now through 2033+.
