Violets, Wild Raspberries, Gossamer Tannins, and Aristocratic Romanée Royalty

The 2021 Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is an ethereal, masterfully sculpted Pinot Noir from one of Vosne-Romanée’s most hallowed terroirs. Crafted by Alain and Sophie Meunier from venerable old vines, it reveals breathtaking aromas of crushed violets, ripe raspberries, exotic incense, and tea leaf. Medium-bodied, silky, and filigreed, it wraps pure red fruit around gossamer tannins and vibrant cool-vintage tension, finishing with endless, noble mineral persistence.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy) 92–96 pts
  • 92–96 Points - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): Still in barrel, without racking. Sample taken from older wood. Plenty of density in the mid red colour but the bouquet is not quite singing. A liquorice note, a touch vegetal, alongside plentiful dark red fruit. Just not quite together. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2022 by Jasper Morris MW.
  • The Romanée-Saint-Vivant Terroir: Situated on the gentle lower slopes directly adjacent to Romanée-Conti. The parcel features fine, clay-rich limestone soils interspersed with pebbles, endowing the Pinot Noir with its signature sensuality, intricate floral perfume, and unmatched silky finesse.
  • Historic Old Vines & Organic Mastery: Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron owns a precious 0.5-hectare parcel of very old vines, planted in the 1920s. Farmed organically with horse-plowing by Alain and Sophie Meunier, the estate applies gentle vinification and careful oak maturation to showcase sublime terroir transparency and sheer elegance.

Tasting Notes

Bright, translucent ruby in appearance, it opens with an intoxicating perfume of freshly crushed violets, wild raspberries, and spiced red cherries, intertwined with hints of Asian incense, black tea, and wet limestone. The palate is medium-bodied, remarkably filigreed, and supple, carrying a vibrant core of red fruit over cashmere-like tannins and energizing natural acidity that extends into an endlessly fragrant, aristocratic finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stems.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1 to 2 hours if opening young. Prime drinking window 2029 through 2048+.
