Crisp Green Apple, Lemon Blossom, Chalky Dust, and Electric Energy

Defying the expectations of its appellation, Jérémy Arnaud’s "Sur Priault" is a Petit Chablis of remarkable depth and tension. Sourced from Portlandian limestone plateaus above Beine and crafted with low-intervention precision, this vibrant Chardonnay bursts with crisp green apple and white peach. Extended aging on the lees provides a surprisingly supple texture, perfectly balanced by a lip-smacking, chalky mineral finish.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay sourced entirely from the "Sur Priault" lieu-dit, situated on the high-elevation plateaus above the village of Beine.
  • Vines are rooted in hard Portlandian limestone soils, which impart a classic, bright, and overtly chalky fruit profile distinct from the Kimmeridgian marl of lower-lying slopes.
  • Vineyards are farmed following organic principles, focusing on soil vitality, biodiversity, and extremely low yields to concentrate flavor in what is typically a high-yielding appellation.
  • Minimalist winemaking: spontaneous indigenous yeast fermentations followed by extended élevage on the fine lees in stainless steel vats. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur additions.
  • The 2023 vintage offers an alluring juxtaposition, bringing generous ripeness and upfront orchard fruit to the traditionally crisp and razor-sharp Petit Chablis category.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 "Sur Priault" pours a pale, shimmering straw with faint green reflections. The nose is incredibly inviting and immediate, jumping from the glass with lively aromas of Granny Smith apple, white peach, Meyer lemon zest, and a dusting of crushed chalk. On the palate, the wine is energetic and profoundly thirst-quenching. A vibrant core of citrus fruit is wrapped in a surprisingly silky, lightly creamy texture owed to its patient lees aging, before culminating in a snappy, bone-dry finish framed by Portlandian salinity.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve chilled at 48–52°F (9–11°C) in a standard white wine glass to maximize its refreshing zip and vibrant aromatics.
  • Decanting: Pop and pour; no aeration required. An ideal apéritif that pairs flawlessly with fresh goat cheese, gougères, or a casual platter of chilled shellfish. Best enjoyed young, from 2024 through 2028.
