Château L’If (often styled L’If) is a relatively recent, small-production Saint‑Émilion project from the Thienpont family and team, sourcing carefully selected right‑bank fruit and emphasizing plot selection from clay and limestone parcels. The 2015 vintage marked a turning point in the project’s approach to blending and plot selection, producing a wine described as intense, mineral, and structured while retaining the plush, sensuous Merlot character typical of the Right Bank. Production in early vintages was limited (a few hundred to a few thousand cases), making the wine relatively rare on secondary markets.
Tasting Notes
Contemporary tasting reports highlight aromas and flavors of blackberries and dark red berries, truffle, espresso, tobacco, licorice, sweet spices (clove), and iodine/sea‑spray or saline mineral notes; the palate is described as full-bodied, creamy-textured yet precise, with robust but integrated tannins and long persistence. Some tasters noted a slightly stalky/high-acid edge in blind tastings, but overall the 2015 is praised for energy and tensile precision.
Serving and Cellaring
Serve at 16–18°C in a large red glass after decanting if young; many reviewers recommend decanting an hour or more for younger vintages to open the aromatics and soften tannins. The 2015 L’If is built to age — reviewers suggest at least 10–15 years to reach a sweet spot, with peak drinking extending 10–30 years from vintage depending on cellar conditions.
