From Château Calon Ségur in Bordeaux’s Saint-Estèphe appellation on the Left Bank, the Le Marquis de Calon Ségur 2021 is a refined second wine, a blend of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from dedicated plots and younger vines on the estate's gravelly soils that impart freshness and accessibility while echoing the grand vin's terroir.
Hand-harvested grapes undergo careful vinification to preserve natural qualities, followed by aging in oak barrels (approximately 30% new) for around 17 months to enhance balance and finesse without overpowering the fruit.
Tasting Notes A fresh, elegant second wine from Saint-Estèphe with fine, caressing tannins, wild bramble and blackberry fruit, and subtle slate and oyster shell minerality, offering a medium-bodied, vibrant palate with polished depth. The nose reveals dark, pliant notes of graphite, spice, leather, dried herbs, and lavender leading into dark red and black fruits. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with caressing tannins, a slight hollow center that fills nicely, and flavors of black fruit, floral hints, and mineral freshness, leading to a long, harmonious finish.
Awards and Accolades The 2021 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur earned 92 points from Antonio Galloni (Vinous) for its dark, pliant expressiveness and substance; 91 points from James Suckling for its fine, caressing tannins and elegant finish.
