Critical Recognition
- 92 Points - Burghound: This is also so firmly reduced nothing is discernible. On the palate, the powerful and serious larger-bodied flavors possess outstanding concentration though not nearly the same minerality, all wrapped in a borderline aggressively citrus-inflected finish that might be a bit too much for some palates. Even so, this too is very good and I suspect that the citrus character will attenuate with time in bottle.
Highlights
- 100% Chardonnay: Sourced from a mere 0.69-hectare, north-easterly facing parcel situated at 250 meters in altitude in the 'En Chatenay' climat.
- Terroir: Firmly rooted in reddish-brown clay over a base of solid limestone beneath the Roche de Vergisson.
- Winemaking: The 55-year-old vines are farmed biodynamically (Demeter-certified). Grapes underwent whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation with zero added sulfur during vinification ("Zen" protocol).
- Elevage: Matured for 17 months in used casks and neutral vats, completing full malolactic fermentation before bottling with minimal sulfur (21 mg/l total).
- Vintage Profile: The 2022 yields a powerful, highly concentrated expression that shows intense initial reduction and a bracing, citrus-dominated finish built for the cellar.
Tasting Notes
Pouring a clear pale gold, the wine initially presents firm reduction, requiring vigorous swirling or decanting to coax out its aromatics. Once the veil lifts, it reveals an incredibly powerful, serious, and large-bodied core of fruit possessing outstanding concentration. Instead of overt stony minerality, the palate delivers profound density wrapped in a highly energetic, borderline aggressive citrus-inflected finish. It is a tightly coiled spring that demands cellaring to harmonize its extreme tension.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 52-54°F (11-12°C) in a large Burgundy bowl to encourage the tightly wound aromas to emerge.
- Decanting: A rigorous decant of 1 to 2 hours is highly recommended if opened in its youth to combat the firm reduction. Ideally, cellar for several years to allow the sharp citrus character to integrate.
