Critical Recognition
- 93 Points - Jasper Morris MW: Despite the north facing site the 2023 En Chatenay has reached 14%. It was picked on 11th September compared to 5th for Au Vignerais. A fullish but still fresh yellow. There is a seductive character to the nose, less initially heavy than Au Vignerais. Brilliantly balanced on the palate, some fresh quince, oozing ripe lemons, on top of a complete bench of white fruit, never heavy and with the usual immaculate backbone. A superb example. After a couple of minutes, the wine really develops at the finish and tightens up. Drink from 2027-2032. (Tasted Jun 2025)
Highlights
- 100% Chardonnay: Sourced from the cool, north-facing 'En Chatenay' climat in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation.
- Terroir: Clay and limestone soils underneath the Roche de Vergisson; the cooler aspect allows for a longer hang time, preserving vital acidity.
- Winemaking: Farmed biodynamically (Demeter-certified). The "Zen" designation signifies vinification without any added sulfur, using only indigenous yeasts.
- Vintage Profile: Harvested on September 11th, the 2023 vintage reached a substantial 14% ABV, yet the north-facing site ensured the wine retained exceptional freshness and an immaculate structural backbone.
- Elevage: Traditionally aged in a mix of used French oak barrels and neutral vats to build mid-palate texture without masking the pristine fruit.
Tasting Notes
Pouring a fullish but brilliant fresh yellow, this wine presents an immediately seductive nose characterized by white fruit, fresh quince, and oozing ripe lemons. On the palate, it masterfully carries its weight and concentration, feeling brilliantly balanced and never heavy. An immaculate, zesty backbone drives the rich fruit profile. With a few minutes in the glass, the wine dynamically evolves, tightening up on a superbly energetic, long finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 52-54°F (11-12°C) in a large white Burgundy glass to allow the layered aromatics to unfurl.
- Decanting: A 30-minute decant is highly beneficial in its youth to allow the finish to fully expand. Ideal for the cellar; best enjoyed between 2027 and 2032 alongside roasted poultry or buttery seafood dishes.
