Critical Recognition
- 90 Points - Jasper Morris MW: Pale fresh lemon yellow. The nose at first is unforthcoming, just a little bit of yeast and a touch lactic, but not heavy. The red soil with iron oxide and manganese tends to give this characteristic. In the mouth, the wine comes fully back into balance with an amazing dimension of orchard fruit and an electric backbone. This too is taking a long time in the glass to reveal itself. A wine of exceptional dimension which needs a little time but then will evolve more rapidly than En Chatenay or Les Quarts. 13% alcohol Drink from 2027-2029. (Tasted Jun 2025)
Highlights
- 100% Chardonnay: Sourced from 'Les Longeays', a highly regarded and prominent Pouilly-Vinzelles climat that borders the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation.
- Terroir: Characterized by striking red clay soils rich in iron oxide and manganese resting on a limestone base, which imparts a distinctly savory early aromatic profile and profound structural depth.
- Winemaking: Farmed biodynamically by the Bret Brothers. Hand-harvested, gently whole-cluster pressed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts to capture an authentic signature of the vintage and site.
- Elevage: Matured traditionally in older oak vessels, encouraging the wine to undergo full malolactic fermentation while retaining its intrinsic, high-tension energy.
- Vintage Profile: The 2023 vintage (13% ABV) yielded a tightly wound yet beautifully balanced wine with exceptional dimension, built to reward short-term cellaring before uncoiling its opulent orchard fruit core.
Tasting Notes
Pouring a pale, fresh lemon yellow, the wine is initially unforthcoming, presenting a shy nose with subtle yeasty and delicately lactic nuances driven by the iron-rich soils. With air, the palate springs to life, coming fully into focus to reveal an astonishing dimension of fresh orchard fruit. This rich mid-palate is perfectly countered by an electric, energetic backbone. It is a masterfully balanced, complex Chardonnay that simply requires a little coaxing in the glass to display its true depth and brilliance.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 52-54°F (11-12°C) in a large white Burgundy glass to allow the tightly bound aromas to emerge.
- Decanting: A 30 to 60-minute decant is highly recommended to encourage the wine to open up fully. It is ideally suited for the cellar; best enjoyed between 2027 and 2029 alongside roasted pork or rich, creamy mushroom dishes.
