Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 93 Points - James Suckling: White grapefruit, Amalfi lemons, shortbread and hazelnuts on the nose, followed by a biscuity yet sharp and racy palate. Underlying chalkiness alongside the attractive hazelnut character. 100% chardonnay from a plot of old vines in Chavot. 4,272 bottles made. Disgorged November 2024. 2.5 g/L dosage. Drink now or hold.
- The "Les Grandes Crayères" Terroir: Sourced entirely from a single lieu-dit planted in 1953 in the village of Chavot (Coteaux Sud d’Épernay). The parcel is celebrated for its paper-thin layer of topsoil resting directly atop soft Campanian chalk, infusing the wine with immense saline energy and laser-like structural cut.
- Aurélien Laherte’s Natural Craft: Farmed biodynamically, fermented with indigenous yeasts in seasoned oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, and aged on the lees before receiving a minimal dosage. This low-intervention philosophy highlights the sheer mineral tension and purity of old-vine Chardonnay from a classic, cool-toned vintage.
Highlights
- 100% Chardonnay from the historic single vineyard "Les Grandes Crayères" (planted in 1953) in Chavot.
- Low-dosage, barrel-fermented grower Champagne; prime drinking now through 2036+.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw-gold with a delicate, lively bead, it opens with pure aromas of lemon zest, crisp green orchard fruit, and white blossom, complemented by nuanced touches of brioche, hazelnut, and wet chalk. The palate is dry, precise, and driving, layering citrus oils and pear over an electric spine of limestone acidity, finishing taut, crystalline, and brilliantly saline.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 9–11°C in standard white wine stems or wide tulip glasses rather than narrow flutes.
- Decanting: Not required, but 10 to 15 minutes in the glass allows its vinous depth to shine. Best enjoyed through 2036+.
