Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 92-95 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): 70% whole bunch, from vines planted in 1970. Solid rich purple. The nose has not quite the same density and personality as the Faconnières – which would be difficult to achieve. Arrow straight here, more linear, showing the limestone in the finish. More complex than I first thought. Tasted Nov 2020 by Jasper Morris MW.
- The "Les Chenevery" 1er Cru Terroir: Located in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis, sitting immediately below the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche. The soils feature a balanced mix of Bajocian limestone scree and brown calcareous clay over fractured rock, delivering both the classic structured flesh of Morey and an undercurrent of mineral elegance and tension.
- Virgile Lignier’s Refined Craft: Since taking over his family domaine, Virgile Lignier has elevated Lignier-Michelot to the upper echelon of the Côte de Nuits. Utilizing thoughtful whole-cluster fermentation (typically around 40–50% for this cuvée) to heighten floral perfume and spice, followed by maturation in carefully selected French oak barrels with modest new wood, his wines emphasize crystalline fruit transparency and silky textural finesse.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir from old vines in the Premier Cru climat "Les Chenevery" in Morey-Saint-Denis.
- Vinified with partial whole-bunch inclusion and matured in fine French oak with restrained new wood.
- From the celebrated, ripe yet balanced 2019 Burgundy vintage; prime drinking window 2025 through 2038+.
Tasting Notes
Bright ruby-crimson in color, it opens with pure, enticing aromas of dark raspberries, redcurrants, and black cherries, seamlessly interwoven with dried peony petals, subtle blood orange zest, sweet spice, and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied, velvety, and tensile, offering succulent red-black fruit over a framework of supple, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural freshness, concluding on an expansive, savory, and chalky mineral finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stemware.
- Decanting: Decant for 30 to 45 minutes if opening in its youth to allow its whole-cluster floral lift and fruit definition to fully expand. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2038+.
