Lemon Confit, Crushed Shells, and Benchmark Stainless-Steel Les Clos Power

The 2023 Domaine Louis Michel & Fils Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos" is a commanding, intensely mineral, and crystalline expression from Chablis' most celebrated Grand Cru vineyard. Vinified and aged strictly in stainless steel, this benchmark bottling offers total purity, free from oak influence. Soaring aromas of lemon confit, fresh lime, white peach, crushed oyster shell, beeswax, and white pepper lead into a full-bodied, muscular palate framed by chiseled Kimmeridgian acidity and an endlessly long, flinty finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Wine Advocate 94+ pts
Burghound 92 pts
Jasper Morris MW 91-93 pts
  • 94+ Points - Kristaps Karklins (Robert Parker's Wine Advocate): The 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos once again asserts itself as the most powerful and commanding wine in Michel’s portfolio this year. It unfurls from the glass with a deep bouquet of lemon confit, apricot and Mirabelle plum, interwoven with notes of freshly baked bread and beeswax. Full-bodied, layered and fleshy yet controlled, it displays considerable reserves of structuring extract that lend energy to its muscular, vinous core. Uniting amplitude with incisiveness, it culminates in a long, persistent finish.
  • 92 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): A cool and airy nose freely offers up its decidedly smoky aromas of mineral reduction, green apple, quinine, shellfish and lemon zest. The utterly delicious, solidly intense and overtly powerful large-bodied flavors are plush yet sleek and mineral-infused while displaying very fine length on the bone-dry, clean and well-balanced finale. What this isn't though, at least not yet in any case, is especially complex so patience will be necessary, which I hasten to point out is not unusual for a very young Les Clos.
  • 91-93 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): Here the wine is much cleaner, and certainly concentrated, but it hasn’t quite found its final path. All a bit up in the air, some ripe yellow fruit competing with the cooler classicism of Clos. Just a little warmth behind. But still with interesting possibilities. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Jun 2024.
  • The Sovereign Les Clos Terroir: Situated mid-slope on steep, south-facing Kimmeridgian limestone terraces packed with fossilized oyster shells (*Exogyra virgula*). Les Clos is universally regarded as the greatest Grand Cru of Chablis, conferring unmatched power, structural muscle, and mineral longevity.
  • Pure Stainless Steel Mastery: Domaine Louis Michel is famous for its unwavering commitment to 100% tank aging. By eliminating oak barrels entirely, the estate captures the unvarnished purity, razor-sharp precision, and raw terroir expression of this mythical site.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay harvested from south-facing Grand Cru vines in Les Clos, Chablis.
  • A radiant 2023 release packed with lemon confit, white peach, green apple, crushed oyster shells, and white pepper.
  • Crafted by Guillaume Michel without any oak contact, offering 10 to 25+ years of majestic cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Pale, luminous straw-gold with vibrant green-platinum reflections.
  • Nose: Intensely fragrant, precise, and flinty. It opens with aromas of lemon confit, fresh lime, and Mirabelle plum, accompanied by crushed oyster shell, beeswax, white pepper, and smoky mineral reduction.
  • Palate: Bone-dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and muscular. The entry delivers a concentrated wave of citrus and orchard fruit that glides across a plush yet structured mid-palate, held together by incisive Kimmeridgian acidity into a long, saline, mineral-driven finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 10–12°C (avoid over-chilling) to allow its complex Grand Cru aromatics and muscular texture to uncoil.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is recommended if opening young. Best enjoyed 2028 through 2045+.
  • Western Pairing: Seared sea scallops, butter-poached lobster, turbot in beurre blanc, or roasted poultry with cream sauce.
  • Asian Pairing: Steamed grouper with ginger and scallions, sashimi platter, salt-and-pepper king prawns, or Cantonese dim sum.
