Dark Cherries, Forest Floor, Earthy Spice, and Classic Gevrey Muscle

The 2023 Domaine Marchand-Grillot Gevrey-Chambertin is a classic, terroir-expressive Pinot Noir from an established multi-generational estate in Gevrey. Blended from prime old-vine village parcels, it opens with pure aromas of black cherries, redcurrants, violet petals, and sous-bois. Medium-bodied and structured, it balances succulent dark fruit against fine, dusty tannins and lively acidity, finishing with a lingering touch of stony minerality and savory spice.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy) 89–91 pts
  • 89–91 Points - Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy): A rich purple black with an immensely heady nose, later picked I suspect. Just two days later than En Songe, but hitting 14%. Luxurious fruit with firm tannins behind, but not cooked. A different style. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Nov 2024 by Jasper Morris MW.
  • Gevrey-Chambertin Village Climat: Sourced from old Pinot Noir vines planted across several choice village lieu-dits in Gevrey-Chambertin. The soils blend limestone scree with iron-rich clay and marl over hard Jurassic rock, imparting both dark-fruited flesh and classic firm structure to the wine.
  • Domaine Marchand-Grillot Savoir-Faire: Managed by Etienne Mathiron, the domaine practices reasoned, sustainable viticulture (*lutte raisonnée*) with manual harvesting and strict sorting. Vinified with traditional maceration and matured for 14 to 18 months in fine-grained French oak barrels with restrained new wood, preserving varietal transparency and authentic village typicity.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir from historic old-vine plots in the village appellation of Gevrey-Chambertin.
  • Crafted using traditional Burgundian vinification and measured French oak maturation.
  • A balanced, charming 2023 release; drinking window 2026 through 2035+.

Tasting Notes

Bright ruby with crimson edges, it opens with pure aromas of black cherries, redcurrants, and wild berries, accompanied by hints of crushed violet petals, forest floor, and delicate baking spice. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy, and well-balanced, layering juicy dark fruit over fine-grained, powdery tannins and fresh natural acidity that leads to a savory, persistent, and stony finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stemware.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant helps soften youthful tannins and open its floral and berry bouquet. Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2035+.
