Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 93+ Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Kabinett (Green Capsule) opens with a clear, bright, flinty, savory and greatly finessed bouquet with crunchy red slate and ripe lemon juice aromas. Round and supple but also finessed and elegant, this is a light-footed, filigreed and aromatic yet still reductive Kabinett with lovely, youthful astringency. It is light as a feather and colored like a parrot. 9.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2023."
- 93 Points – James Suckling: "The intense wild-strawberry and wild-herb aromas make this stand out of the crowd of Mosel Kabinett wines. Very tight and almost strict on the sleek, linear palate. So much drive at the finish. Drink or hold."
- Decoding the Molitor Capsules: Markus Molitor utilizes a unique color-coded capsule system to indicate the flavor profile of his wines regardless of the traditional German Prädikat naming. White capsules represent bone-dry (*trocken*) wines; amber/gold capsules represent sweet (*süss*) styles; and the **Green Capsule indicates off-dry (*feinherb* or fine-tart)**. Sourced from the precipitous, ungrafted vines of the Ürziger Würzgarten, Molitor applies meticulous hand-sorting and slow, cool natural ferments to craft Mosel Rieslings of legendary focus and extreme aging potential.
Highlights
- 100% Riesling sourced entirely from the steep, ungrafted, old-vine parcels of the world-famous Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard.
- Grown on a highly distinct, iron-dense volcanic red slate terroir that imparts a unique, exotic spice element found nowhere else in the Mosel.
- Fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts in traditional, large 1,000-liter neutral oak casks (*Fuder*) and stopped naturally to lock in its precise off-dry framework.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Pale straw-yellow with clear, star-bright silvery platinum hints.
- Nose: Lifted, pristine, and beautifully unique, opening with yellow plum, kiwi fruit, and an intriguing hint of wild strawberry, deeply layered with white pepper, aniseed, yeast lees, and crushed slate stone.
- Palate: Off-dry, light-bodied, and jaw-droppingly energetic. A delicate wave of succulent orchard fruit sweetness strikes the palate first, only to be immediately countered and cleansed by a laser-sharp, electric line of slate acidity. The texture is completely weightless and dancing, finishing exceptionally dry, clean, and salty.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve well-chilled at 8–10°C to highlight its crystalline acidity and keep its off-dry fruit profile incredibly snappy.
- Decanting: Not strictly required, though a quick 10 minutes in the glass helps the wild-yeast reduction stretch out beautifully. Possesses an extraordinary structural life expectancy to age gracefully through 2040–2050.
- Western Pairing: Spicy Thai crab cakes, dynamic blue cheeses, classic German pork schnitzel with lemon, or roasted pork belly with apple compote.
- Asian Pairing: 泰式青咖喱雞 (Thai Green Chicken Curry), 四川口水雞 (Sichuan Mouthwatering Chicken), or 鹽酥雞 (Taiwanese Salt and Pepper Basil Popcorn Chicken).
