From Weingut Markus Molitor in Germany’s Mosel Valley, the Wehlener Klosterberg Riesling Auslese** Sweet 2017 is sourced from the steep, slate-rich Wehlener Klosterberg vineyard that rises directly above the winery and overlooks the Mosel River. This south-facing slope of weathered slate imparts pronounced minerality and freshness, giving the naturally sweet Auslese style remarkable precision and elegance.
Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes, with meticulous selection of late-harvested and partially botrytised berries to achieve high must weight and concentration. The juice undergoes spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and large traditional oak, followed by extended ageing on fine lees to enhance texture, aromatic complexity and length while preserving vibrant acidity.
Tasting Notes
A rich, luscious Mosel Riesling with intense aromas of ripe peach, apricot, candied lemon and grapefruit peel, complemented by notes of honey, blossom and wet slate. On the palate it is dense, silky and mouthfilling, yet the incisive acidity provides superb tension, giving an almost Eiswein-like precision to the lush sweetness. The finish is very long and saline, leaving lingering impressions of stone fruit, citrus zest and mineral spice.
Awards and Accolades
Markus Molitor’s 2017 Wehlener Klosterberg Riesling Auslese** (Golden Capsule) has been highly rated, with Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate scoring it 96 points for its ripe, concentrated citrus and stone-fruit bouquet, purity of slate character and precisely balanced, sweet-yet-racy palate. The review praises its elegance, depth and tension, highlighting it as one of the standout sweet Mosel Rieslings of the vintage.
Serving and Cellaring
Serve at 8–10°C, ideally slightly chilled and allowed a few minutes in the glass so the layers of fruit, honey and minerality can fully emerge. This Auslese pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue or washed-rind cheeses, fruit tarts, citrus desserts and lightly spicy Asian cuisine, and it can be enjoyed now or cellared for 15–20 years for greater complexity and tertiary notes of dried fruits, caramel and roasted nuts.
