Aristocratic, Polished, and Absolutely Seamless

Crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit on the legendary Castillo Ygay property, this benchmark Reserva represents the epitome of grand Rioja Alta refinement. Moving completely away from rustic or heavily extracted styles, the 2020 vintage captures a beautifully polished, seamless framework. It opens with an expressive bouquet of wild blackberries, red currants, aromatic cedar, and sweet tobacco leaf, balancing a medium-to-full-bodied palate with a fine line of refreshing acidity and ultra-silky, fine-grained tannins.

Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation

  • 94 Points – James Suckling: "Fabulous aromas of crushed berry and dark fruits with walnuts, hazelnuts, and ginger. Cinnamon and honey melon too. Full-bodied, very tight and firm. Linear backbone of fruit and tannins. Very long and racy. 22 months in American oak (six months new and then racked into used). Beautiful now but needs another two or three years to soften. A triumph."
  • 94+ Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "TThe 2020 Rioja Reserva, their flagship wine, comes from the 300 hectares of estate vineyards. Tempranillo makes up 82% of the blend this year, complemented with 8% Graciano, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Garnacha. It has controlled ripeness at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.65 and 5.1 grams of acidity. I love the aromatics here—floral and elegant, more in the style of the 2018 than the 2019. It's lighter, more elegant and fine-boned and has a silky texture and very fine tannins. Both 2019 and 2020 are very good, but 2020 is more my style. 980,000 bottles produced. It was bottled after 21 months in American oak barrels."
  • The Founding Majesty of Rioja: Established in 1852 by Vicente de Murrieta, Marqués de Murrieta is the historic first estate ever built in Rioja. Operating entirely out of the massive, single-contiguous Finca Ygay property in Rioja Alta, the winery seamlessly fuses aristocratic traditions with ultra-modern technical precision. By maintaining complete control over their estate vineyards and utilizing meticulously selected American oak, Murrieta crafts a standard-setting Reserva celebrated around the world for its aristocratic weight, total balance, and timeless consistency.

Highlights

  • An estate-grown blend composed primarily of Tempranillo, dynamically balanced with portions of native Graciano, Mazuelo, and Garnacha.
  • Sourced entirely from the 300-hectare Finca Ygay property, rooted in chalky, limestone-clay soils at an altitude up to 485 meters.
  • Matured for 16 to 18 months in 225-liter American oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 12 additional months of post-bottling refinement in the estate cellars.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Intense, bright cherry-red with clean garnet reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Lifted, aristocratic, and layered, offering clean aromas of fresh red currant, blackberry, and dark cherry, seamlessly intertwined with aromatic cedar, sweet tobacco leaf, vanilla bean, and a soft touch of baking spice.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and exceptionally fluid. Concentrated red and black forest fruits move seamlessly across the palate, driven by a fresh line of linear acidity. The mouthfeel is incredibly silky and polished, shaped by ultra-fine tannins that draw into a long, dry, and beautifully integrated wood-spiced finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at room temperature between 16–18°C. A controlled cool environment preserves its elegant aromatics and fine structural layout.
  • Decanting: A brief 30-minute breathe is recommended to allow the youthful wood spice and silky fruit layers to open up completely. Built to deliver massive pleasure immediately or cellar comfortably over the next 10–15 years.
  • Western Pairing: Slow-roasted lamb shanks, grilled prime ribeye steaks, roasted duck breast, or aged Manchego cheese.
  • Asian Pairing: 柱侯牛腩煲 (Braised Beef Brisket and Tendon Pot), 椒鹽排骨 (Salt and Pepper Spare Ribs), or 紅燒乳鴿 (Braised Roasted Pigeon).
