Baked Plums, Dark Cocoa, Sweet Spice, and Venetian Appassimento Grandeur

The 2019 Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva is an opulent, majestic red crafted from sunset-facing hillside vineyards above Lake Garda. Enriched with rare native Oseleta grapes alongside Corvina and Rondinella, it unfolds aromas of baked black plums, marasca cherries, dark chocolate, and roasted spices. Full-bodied, velvety, and profound, it balances monumental richness with firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity, finishing remarkably long, warm, and aristocratic.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 94 pts
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: A complex and deep wine. Highlights of dark chocolate and black pepper over black cherries. Refined and condensed tannins with exuberant, racy acidity and full body. Powerful, this has cellaring potential. Drinkable now but best from 2029.
  • The "Costasera" Sunset Slopes & Oseleta Addition: Sourced exclusively from hillside vineyards in the historic Valpolicella Classica zone (Marano, Negrar, Sant'Ambrogio, and San Pietro in Cariano) facing sunset towards Lake Garda. The warm afternoon sun and reflective light off the lake promote ideal grape maturation. The Riserva distinguished itself by incorporating roughly 10% Oseleta—an ancient, tannic, and deep-colored native variety rediscovered by Masi—adding extraordinary backbone and age-worthiness.
  • Extended Appassimento & Long Aging: Crafted using Masi’s trademarked Appaxximento expertise. The grapes dry naturally on bamboo racks (*aréle*) for over 120 days through winter, concentrating sugars, extracts, and noble aromas. Following slow, cold fermentation, the Riserva matures for over three years in a combination of 600-liter oak tonneaux and large traditional Slavonian oak barrels, followed by at least one year of bottle aging.

Highlights

  • Classico blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and 10% rare native Oseleta.
  • Produced from sunset-facing hillside slopes and aged over 38 months in wood casks.
  • From the outstanding 2019 Veneto vintage; prime drinking window 2026 through 2045+.

Tasting Notes

Opaque, dark ruby with rich garnet tints, it opens with commanding aromas of baked plums, brandied marasca cherries, and dried figs, intertwined with dark chocolate, espresso bean, sweet pipe tobacco, cloves, and leather. The palate is full-bodied, dense, and velvety, wrapping concentrated dark fruit around muscular, fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity, culminating in an expansive, warming, and endlessly persistent finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 18–20°C in large, rounded Amarone or Bordeaux stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1.5 to 2 hours before serving to let its monumental structure and rich appassimento layers unfold. Prime drinking window 2026 through 2045+.
