Wild Red Berries, Crushed Volcanic Lava, Dried Herbs, and High-Altitude Etna Tension

The 2021 Planeta "Eruzione 1614" Nerello Mascalese is a tensile, volcanic red grown on Mount Etna's high northern slopes. Named after the legendary 10-year eruption of 1614, it reveals expressive aromas of wild strawberries, sour cherries, blood orange, ash, and wild Mediterranean herbs. Medium-bodied and crystalline, it balances vibrant red fruit against fine, chalky volcanic tannins and racy mountain acidity, finishing with intense saline and mineral persistence.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 94 pts
Wine Advocate 92 pts
  • 94 Points - James Suckling: The organic Planeta 2021 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 shows a rather unexpected bouquet with delicate aromas that recall pressed rose and dried iris. Volcanic mineral notes, which are dark and savory in nature, usually dominate Etna's red wines, but this bottle takes a pretty departure toward wild berry, forest and dried flower instead. The wine ferments in steel vats and ages in 25- and 36-hectoliter botte for 12 months. These larger containers help to render the oak almost invisible. However, the winemaking philosophy behind this bottle gives good room to texture and tannic firmness. What I like most about this wine is the clarity of its primary aromas. Production is 15,500 bottles.
  • 92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: A delicious, juicy and vivid nerello mascalese showcasing aromas of forest berries, grilled herbs, black earth and some baking spices. Medium-bodied with sleek tannins and bright acidity. Plenty of verve and juiciness, with more forest berry character in the flavorful and flamboyant finish, From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
  • The Historic 1614 Lava Flows of Feudo di Mezzo: Sourced from the Sciaranuova and Montelaguardia contrade situated at approximately 820 to 850 meters above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The name "Eruzione 1614" commemorates the legendary volcanic eruption of 1614, which lasted ten years and halted right at the edge of these vineyards. The soil consists of black volcanic sands, stratified basalt, and decomposing lava rock (*sciara*), granting exceptional tension and an unmistakable mineral signature.
  • Planeta’s High-Elevation Etna Project: Crafted by the renowned Planeta family, this wine combines Nerello Mascalese (with roughly 9% Nerello Cappuccio). Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats with gentle extraction, it matures for around 12 months in large neutral oak casks (*botti*) and stainless steel to let the high-altitude, volcanic terroir speak without heavy oak interference.

Highlights

  • Predominantly Nerello Mascalese with a touch of Nerello Cappuccio grown at 850m elevation on Mount Etna.
  • Aged in neutral wood casks and stainless steel to showcase pure volcanic minerality.
  • From the fresh, balanced 2021 Etna vintage; prime drinking window 2024 through 2034+.

Tasting Notes

Translucent ruby-red with bright garnet tints, it opens with pure, high-toned aromas of sour cherries, wild strawberries, and redcurrants, seamlessly interwoven with notes of blood orange peel, volcanic ash, dried oregano, and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, and vibrant, carrying crunchy red fruit over a framework of fine-grained, chalky tannins and racy mountain acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory, and distinctly saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy or Nebbiolo stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 30 minutes to allow its volcanic ash, dried florals, and red fruit definition to fully expand. Best enjoyed from 2024 through 2034+.
