Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 91–94 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): A fresh and pure nose of primarily red and dark berry fruit exudes whiffs of the sauvage, earth and an interesting hint of leather. There is better concentration to the tautly muscled medium-bodied flavors that display good power and plenty of punch on the solidly complex and persistent finish. This moderately structured effort will clearly need a few years of bottling age.
- The Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Terroir: Perched on the upper slope of Morey-Saint-Denis adjacent to Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard rests on extremely thin topsoil over solid Bajocian limestone bedrock ("la roche"), forcing vine roots deep into the fissures to produce wines celebrated for their sheer minerality, dark-fruited density, and imposing structure.
- Biodynamic Viticulture & Amphora Maturation: Frédéric Magnien farms these historic old-vine plots with certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter) rigor. Elevage is meticulously split between seasoned oak barrels and terracotta clay amphorae, ensuring complete site transparency and allowing the site's brooding power to express itself without new oak influence.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir from Domaine Michel Magnien’s prized old-vine parcels in Clos de la Roche Grand Cru.
- Certified biodynamic viticulture matured partially in terracotta amphorae for pure site transparency.
- A classically structured, aristocratic 2021 Burgundy; prime cellaring window 2030 through 2048+.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-purple with vivid brilliance, it opens with pure, brooding aromas of ripe dark cherries, wild blackberries, and dried violets, layered with crushed limestone, underbrush, and exotic spices. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, muscular, and exceptionally deep, displaying concentrated dark fruit framed by firm, architectural tannins and tensile acidity that drives into an expansive, stony, and remarkably persistent finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stems.
- Decanting: Decant for 1 to 2 hours if opening young. Best enjoyed from 2030 through 2048+.
