Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 89–91 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): A distinctly cool and ultra-fresh nose speaks of wild red and dark currant, forest floor and a whiff of the sauvage. The beautifully detailed and almost painfully intense middleweight flavors exude evident minerality on the crunchy, even crisp, linear and slightly lean finish. This needs to further flesh out so a few year of cellaring should be beneficial.
- The "Les Goulots" Premier Cru Terroir: Perched near the top of the Côte in northern Gevrey-Chambertin, situated directly above Champeaux and bordering Combe au Moine. Named after the hillside water gullies (*goulottes*), its elevated altitude brings cool winds, while thin topsoils over fractured Jurassic white marl and limestone compel vine roots deep into the rock, imparting electric energy and tensile mineral structure.
- Biodynamic Purity & Amphora Elevage: Frédéric Magnien cultivates the estate’s vines under certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter) standards. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in a thoughtful split between seasoned oak barrels and terracotta clay amphorae, this elevage preserves pure red fruit aromatics and translucent limestone minerality without any intrusive new wood.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir from the high-altitude Premier Cru "Les Goulots" in northern Gevrey-Chambertin.
- Certified biodynamic viticulture matured in a harmonious combination of seasoned barrels and terracotta amphorae.
- A classically cool-toned, mineral-focused 2021 Burgundy; prime drinking window 2027 through 2038+.
Tasting Notes
Bright, translucent ruby in color, it opens with pure, high-toned aromas of fresh red cherries, wild raspberries, and crushed violet petals, intertwined with damp limestone, dried tea leaves, and faint exotic spice. The palate is medium-bodied, linear, and chiseled, presenting crunchy red berry fruit over a bed of chalky, fine-grained tannins and energetic natural acidity that carries through to an expansive, savory, and mineral-lifted finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stems.
- Decanting: Decant for 45 minutes to 1 hour if opening in its youth to allow its aromatic nuances to expand. Best enjoyed from 2027 through 2038+.
