Terroir, History & Acclaim
- 89–92 Points - Allen Meadows (Burghound): A brooding and notably more deeply pitched nose grudgingly displays its array of wild dark berries, humus and newly turned earth. The sleek and vibrant if not especially dense medium weight flavors do though possess an appealing texture as well as focused power on the compact, austere and built-to-age finale. This is a bit grumpy, but the development potential appears to be present for it to age well over the mid to longer-term.
- The "Les Millandes" Premier Cru Terroir: Situated on the northern sector of Morey-Saint-Denis, directly downslope from Grand Cru Clos de la Roche, flanked by La Riotte and Les Faconnières. Its deeper clay-limestone soils contain significant colluvial gravel and limestone fragments from the grand cru above, imparting natural power, fleshy depth, and genuine noble structure.
- Frédéric Magnien’s Biodynamic & Amphora Craft: Certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter), Domaine Michel Magnien relies on indigenous yeast fermentations, gentle extraction, and an aging regime split between seasoned oak barrels and unglazed terracotta clay amphorae. This approach keeps the intense fruit profile unencumbered by woody tannins or new oak char.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir from the revered Premier Cru "Les Millandes," situated immediately beneath Clos de la Roche.
- Certified biodynamic viticulture matured in a combination of neutral oak casks and terracotta amphorae.
- A classically structured, cool-toned 2021 Burgundy; prime drinking window 2027 through 2038+.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby with crimson highlights, it opens with pure aromas of ripe black cherries, redcurrants, and wild blackberries, complemented by sous-bois, crushed rose petals, and a dusting of clove. The palate is medium-bodied and well-concentrated, wrapping juicy dark fruit around a framework of fine-grained, firm tannins and vibrant cool-vintage acidity, finishing with persistent savory length and chalky mineral tension.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at 15–17°C in wide Burgundy stems.
- Decanting: Decant for 45 minutes to 1 hour if opening in its youth. Best enjoyed from 2027 through 2038+.
