Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 94 Points – James Suckling: "Aromas of sliced strawberry, red cherry and grated nutmeg. Medium-to full-bodied with fine, slightly tense tannins. Bright and acidity-driven on the palate, with lots of white-peppery excitement. Grounded by notes of wet stone and sage. Well structured and layered. Best after 2024."
- The Legend of the 1614 Flow: Named in honor of Mount Etna’s most historic eruption—which lasted an incredible ten years, forming a unique border around the estate's current vineyards—the *Eruzione 1614* range represents Planeta's highest intellectual achievements. Sourced entirely from the black sands of the Sciara Nuova vineyard at 850 meters above sea level, the estate relies on small percentages of native Nerello Cappuccio to round out the fierce mineral angles of Nerello Mascalese. By stepping away from small barriques and choosing neutral oak aging, Planeta coaxes an athletic wine celebrated for its transparency, precision, and cellaring depth.
Highlights
- An elite volcanic blend composed of 91% Nerello Mascalese and 9% Nerello Cappuccio, hand-harvested from the iconic Sciara Nuova vineyard.
- Grown at an extreme elevation of 850 meters on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, rooted in unique, dark volcanic terrace debris.
- Fermented in stainless steel tanks before undergoing meticulous maturation for 12 months in large, neutral 25HL French oak casks to completely preserve mineral tipicity.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Translucent, pale ruby-red with brilliant crystalline copper reflections at the rim.
- Nose: Ethereal, vertical, and deeply unique, opening with crisp aromas of sour cherry, tart red currant, and wild rosehip, complexed by crushed gravel, blood orange zest, pink peppercorns, and an underlying streak of smoky matchstick reduction.
- Palate: Bone-dry, light-to-medium-bodied, and jaw-droppingly linear. Vibrant waves of crunchy red forest fruits hit the palate immediately, driven forward by a piercing line of mountain acidity. The mid-palate has an incredibly chiseled, svelte texture, shaped by fine-grained, ash-dry tannins before drawing out into an exceptionally long, saline finish marked by crushed slate and dried herbs.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 14–15°C. Treating it with the exact same temperature profile as an elite Burgundy or Barolo allows its delicate floral aromatics and high-altitude mineral frame to shine.
- Decanting: A brief 20-minute breathe in a wide-bottomed glass helps the reductive volcanic notes integrate and cohere beautifully. Possesses immaculate DNA to age over the next 8–12 years.
- Western Pairing: Herb-crusted rack of lamb, pan-seared duck breast with cherry reduction, roasted wild mushroom tarts, or seared tuna steaks.
- Asian Pairing: 明炉燒鴨 (Roasted Duck), 滷水鵝 (Chiu Chow Braised Goose), or 蔥爆羊肉 (Sautéed Lamb with Scallions).
