Crisp Apricots, Honeyed Chamomile, Crushed Flint, and Giorgio Rivetti’s Timorasso Power

The 2024 La Spinetta "Derthona" Timorasso is a structured, white-wine tour de force from the chalky hillsides of Colli Tortonesi in southeastern Piedmont. Crafted by Giorgio Rivetti, this ancient native varietal reveals captivating aromas of yellow peaches, ripe apricots, acacia blossom, and wet stones. Full-bodied, textural, and waxen, it balances deep orchard fruit with vibrant, laser-like acidity and mineral grip, culminating in a dry, savory, and remarkably long finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling 93 pts
  • 93 Points - James Suckling: A layered wine with a floral edge and vibrant, complex orange peel and orange blossom aromas that are polished and slightly minerally. Sharp and silky on the palate, with a medium body and floral, saline flavors. Cleansing yet precise. Drink or hold.
  • The Derthona / Colli Tortonesi Terroir: Sourced from hillside vineyards situated at roughly 250 to 300 meters above sea level around Montemarzino and Montegioco in the Colli Tortonesi. The soils are characterized by compact Tortonian marl mixed with clay and calcareous limestone (Sant'Agata marls), which endow this ancient white grape with phenomenal phenolic structure, dense extract, and deep mineral tension.
  • Giorgio Rivetti’s White Renaissance: Recognized as "the Barolo of white wines" for its power and aging potential, Timorasso was brought back from near extinction in the late 20th century. La Spinetta invested in the region to champion its native grandeur, vinifying the wine entirely in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and aging it on fine lees for around 8 months to preserve aromatic purity and laser-sharp freshness without any oak intervention.

Highlights

  • 100% Timorasso from sustainably farmed estate vineyards in Colli Tortonesi, Piedmont.
  • Aged on fine lees in stainless steel to capture pure varietal depth, waxen texture, and mineral tension.
  • A vibrant, age-worthy 2024 vintage; prime drinking window 2025 through 2034+.

Tasting Notes

Bright straw-yellow with luminous golden-green reflections, it opens with expressive aromas of ripe yellow peach, apricot, and lemon zest, intertwined with dried chamomile, wild thyme, beeswax, and crushed flint stone. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, structured, and waxy, framing generous stone fruit core flavors with a firm phenolic grip and mouth-watering natural acidity, concluding on a persistent, savory, and distinctly saline finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 11–13°C in wide Burgundy or large white wine stemware rather than narrow flutes.
  • Decanting: Decant for 20 to 30 minutes if opening in its youth to allow its dense texture and complex aromatics to fully blossom. Best enjoyed from 2025 through 2034+.
