Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 94 Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Le Baròncole (a certified organic wine) shows bright fruit with summer cherry and redcurrant. It offers textural heft and weight. Its Riserva status (with extended aging) is well noted. With time in the glass, it unfolds to leather, potting soil and crushed stone. This vintage does however show a more accessible personality overall (and a powerful 15% alcohol content)."
- The Organic Legends of Gaiole: Run with absolute devotion by the Martini di Cigala family, San Giusto a Rentennano is universally revered as one of the elite reference points for authentic, uncompromised Tuscan winemaking. Located on an ancient monastery site in the southernmost, sun-drenched sector of Gaiole in Chianti, the estate is world-famous for its structural density, wild herbal expressions, and certified organic vineyard care. Le Baroncole is a single-vineyard selection that perfectly acts as a bridge between their classic estate Chianti and their legendary cult flagship Percarlo, delivering magnificent scale and monumental cellaring power.
Highlights
- A premium, single-vineyard estate blend consisting of 97% Sangiovese and 3% Canaiolo from the finest plots of the Le Baroncole parcel.
- Grown under certified organic guidelines on distinctive soils rich in pliocene sands, large river stones (*ciottoli*), and calcareous clay matrices.
- Fermented spontaneously with wild vineyard yeasts in glass-lined concrete vats, followed by 16 to 18 months of maturation in neutral French oak tonneaux and large casks.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Deep, opaque ruby-purple with dark garnet centers.
- Nose: Intensely deep, dark, and soulful, opening with aromas of macerated black cherry, dark plum, and black currant, intricately layered with black tea leaf, licorice, new leather, iron filings, and a touch of wild rosemary.
- Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and highly muscular. Concentrated layers of dark forest preserves and spice box elements saturate the palate, driven forcefully by a vibrant, mouthwatering line of acidity. The mid-palate has phenomenal density, heavily armored by firm, powdery, and chalky tannins that resolve into a very long finish accented by tobacco leaf and cooling minerals.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve at room temperature between 16–18°C. Keeping it slightly cool frames its muscular, southern-Gaiole fruit core perfectly.
- Decanting: A minimum of 1-to-2 hours of decanting is highly recommended to let the dense, youthful tannin chassis loosen up and broaden. Built with spectacular structural longevity to cellar beautifully through 2038–2045.
- Western Pairing: Slow-roasted lamb shanks with rosemary, grilled prime T-bone steaks, wild boar ragù over hand-rolled pasta, or aged Pecorino Toscano.
- Asian Pairing: 柱侯牛腩煲 (Braised Beef Brisket and Tendon Pot), 紅燒乳鴿 (Braised Roasted Pigeon), or Sautéed Lamb with Scallions (蔥爆羊肉).
