Aristocratic, Vibrant, and Steeped in History

Hailing from the historic birthplace of the Chianti Classico recipe, this elegant Riserva masterfully balances classic Tuscan structure with modern purity. Moving away from heavy, over-extracted styles, the 2022 vintage showcases a lifted, complex bouquet of dark cherries, wild balsamic herbs, leather, and blood orange zest. It is a medium-to-full-bodied red wine with a chiseled, upright palate, locking in a vibrant vein of classic Sangiovese acidity with firm, chalky sandstone tannins that guarantee spectacular cellar longevity.

Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation

  • 94 Points – James Suckling: "A restrained and classic wine with aromas of smoke, woodland, graphite, leather, dried cherries and potpourri. Medium-bodied, this shows refined tannins, a velvety texture, crisp acidity and a chewy, dynamic finish with tension and balance. Drink or hold."
  • 91 Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In the bottle with the black label, the Barone Ricasoli 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio is approachable and accessible, with a somewhat rich texture and a little less definition in terms of aromas. You get standard dark cherry, blue flower and earthy tones, but these flavors feel a little softer in this 100% Sangiovese. The wine has good volume and depth."
  • The Cradle of Chianti: Barone Ricasoli is the oldest winery in Italy and the second oldest in the entire world, with a family heritage tied to Brolio Castle since 1141. It was here in 1872 that Baron Bettino Ricasoli famously drafted the original formula for Chianti. Today, under Francesco Ricasoli, the estate leads the region in soil mapping and zoning, selecting grapes from premium, high-altitude vineyards rich in stony macigno sandstone to craft an authentic, lineage-proud Riserva.
  • A noble, estate-grown blend consisting primarily of Sangiovese, accented by small, traditional percentages of Colorino and Malvasia Nera.
  • Grown on the steep, sun-drenched hillsides surrounding Brolio Castle in Gaiole in Chianti, rooted in ancient sandstone, Alberese limestone, and marine clay sediments.
  • Matured elegantly for 18 months in large-format, neutral 500-liter French oak tonneaux to refine the tannins while carefully preserving pure, transparent varietal terroir.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Luminous, deep ruby red with clear garnet reflections.
  • Nose: Lifted, intense, and complexly layered, exploding with fresh Morello cherry, dark plum, and iris petals, intricately woven with balsamic wild herbs, new leather, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone.
  • Palate: Strictly dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and highly vertical. Concentrated red and black forest fruit flavors are propelled forcefully across the palate by an electric line of mouthwatering acidity. The mid-palate possesses excellent structural density, framed by firm, powdery, and savory tannins that extend into a long, mineral-driven finish larded with blood orange zest.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at room temperature between 16–18°C. Keeping it under a controlled cool environment allows the delicate herbal and balsamic layers to breathe beautifully.
  • Decanting: A 30-to-45 minute decant is highly recommended to allow the tight, youthful tannin chassis to expand and cohere. This 2022 release possesses fantastic structural longevity to cellar beautifully over the next 10–15 years.
  • Western Pairing: Florentine T-bone steaks brushed with rosemary, roasted wild boar, hand-rolled pici pasta with duck ragù, or aged Pecorino Toscano cheese.
  • Asian Pairing: 柱侯牛腩煲 (Braised Beef Brisket and Tendon Pot), 紅燒乳鴿 (Braised Roasted Pigeon), or Sautéed Lamb with Scallions (蔥爆羊肉).
