Fresh Pears, White Pepper, Ferns, and Kamptal Premier Cru Nobility

The 2024 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner Ried Renner 1ÖTW is an aristocratic, crystalline Austrian single-vineyard white. Sourced from the south-facing slopes of the Gaisberg, it unfurls restrained aromas of fresh pears, crisp limes, white pepper, and wild ferns. Medium-bodied yet densely textured, it matches deep orchard fruit against vibrant Kamptal acidity, concluding on a focused, silky, and delicately chewy mineral finish.

Critical Recognition

James Suckling 92 pts
  • 92 Points - James Suckling: A restrained wine with aromas of limes, white pepper, fresh pears and ferns. Light-bodied with weight, crisp refreshing acidity and a silky texture on the mid-palate. Tight and chewy finish. Drink now.

Highlights

  • 100% Grüner Veltliner sourced from Ried Renner, classified as an Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (ÖTW) Erste Lage (Premier Cru) site.
  • Located on the lower, southern foot of the Gaisberg mountain in Kammern, where deep calcareous loess overlays weathered primary rock gneiss, mica, and amphibolite.
  • Deep soil water-retention combined with intense sunshine builds richer physiological weight and spicy power while maintaining vivid Kamptal mineral tension.
  • Crafted at Schloss Gobelsburg, a Cistercian monastic estate established in 1171, directed with historic precision by Michael Moosbrugger.
  • Fermented and matured in neutral Austrian Manhartsberg oak casks to develop silky texture and phenolic grip without oak flavor imprint; cellars gracefully for 15+ years.

Tasting Notes

Bright, pale straw-yellow with shimmering green reflections, it opens with pure, elegant aromas of crisp green pears, lime zest, and white peach, layered with fresh white pepper, watercress, crushed ferns, and a saline, stony mineral undertone. The palate is medium-bodied, silky, and focused, balancing juicy orchard fruit against crystalline mountain acidity and fine phenolic extract, concluding on a persistent, tightly wound, and savory mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 10–12°C in standard white wine or universal Riesling glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 20 to 30 minutes in its youth to allow its tight pepper spice and herbal-mineral complexities to fully expand. Best enjoyed from 2026 through 2038+.
