Schloss Johannisberg Riesling Kabinett Rotlack 2018

From Schloss Johannisberg in Germany’s Rheingau, the Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Rotlack 2018 is a refined 100% Riesling from a single vineyard on quartzite soils. Hand-harvested and vinified with one-third in large oak vats and two-thirds with malolactic fermentation, it offers a pale yellow hue with vibrant complexity.

Tasting Notes

A vibrant, off-dry white with lush fruit and mineral finesse, showcasing Rheingau’s terroir.
The nose reveals citrus, wild strawberry, and slate, with hints of lime zest and herbs. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and delicately sweet, with crisp acidity, a creamy texture, and flavors of lemon, grapefruit, and a long, mineral finish.

Awards and Accolades

93 Points - James Suckling "A section of vines with shallow soil at the top of the hill, just below the castle. The nose has a mix of crushed-pebble aromas and fresh lime juice. The palate is so succulent and juicy with a very fresh array of yellow stone fruit. Smooth and fresh. Some handy grip at the finish. Drink now."

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The 2018 Schloss Johannisberger Riesling Kabinett Rotlack is intense, ripe and quite intense but fine and elegant on the nose. Lush and round, this is a very elegant, finessed and playful, silky and crystalline Schloss Johannisberger with beautiful sweetness and mineral character. This is a gorgeous wine, though too rich and structured for Kabinett but a serious and expressive, very elegant Rheingau Riesling. The wine was vinified with one-third in large oak vats that didn't undergo the malolactic fermentation like the other two-thirds of the assemblage. The 2018 has been bottled with 22 grams of residual sugar (AP no. 04 19). Tasted in August 2019."

Food Pairings

Pair this white with Western dishes like grilled fish or creamy risotto to highlight its vibrant fruit and minerality. For Chinese cuisine, try 蒸鮮蝦餃, 清蒸石斑魚, 蟹鉗, 醬爆肉丁, 椒鹽九肚魚, or 豉椒炒蜆 to complement its crisp acidity and citrus notes. Ideal for elegant dinners or seafood feasts.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve chilled at 10°C in a white wine glass to enhance aromas; no decanting needed. Enjoy now or cellar until 2030 for added complexity, developing honeyed and nutty notes. Explore our Rheingau collection for more Riesling classics.
