Muscular Dark Berries, Forest Earth, and Grand Cru Power

The 2021 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Corton-Rognet Grand Cru is a powerful, deeply complex, and authoritative red Burgundy that balances the intense natural power of the Hill of Corton with the luminous freshness of the 2021 vintage. Sourced from old vines on stony limestone terraces, it opens with commanding aromas of ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, crushed iron, and damp forest earth. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, broad, and structured, driven by dense dark fruit sap and firm, cellar-worthy tannins.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
Burghound 91-94 pts
Jasper Morris 91-93 pts
  • 91-94 Points - Burghound (Allen Meadows): A deft application of wood sets off very fresh red and blue berry fruit aromas that evidence an intense earthiness. There is very fine intensity to the muscular broad-shouldered flavors that flash excellent power and an almost creamy mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the moderately, austere, beautifully long and mouth coating finish. This isn't quite as concentrated as the Pruliers but it's finer and should age effortlessly.
  • 91-93 Points - Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy): One barrel more than in 2020. Quite a full crimson purple in colour. A certain density of fruit evident on the nose, with some darker fruit elements. This is more than medium bodied with some good tension behind, correct and indeed useful tannins at the back, with just the right acidity. Not exceptionally expressive but refined. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Nov 2022.
  • The Formidable Terroir of Corton-Rognet: Situated on the mid-slope of the Hill of Corton in Ladoix-Serrigny, *Corton-Rognet* features iron-rich reddish clay soils overlying Bajocian limestone. This stony, well-drained exposure delivers some of the most concentrated, structured, and long-lived Pinot Noir in all of Burgundy.
  • Organic Mastery at Domaine Taupenot-Merme: Led by sibling team Romain and Virginie Taupenot, this Morey-Saint-Denis-based estate spans 13 hectares across prestigious Burgundian appellations. Practicing organic viticulture, they employ minimal extraction and disciplined oak usage to allow each vineyard’s unique geological identity to shine through unadorned.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir organically farmed from old vines in the prestigious Corton-Rognet Grand Cru vineyard.
  • A radiant 2021 Grand Cru expression combining dark fruit depth, iron minerality, and electric acidity.
  • Crafted by the renowned Domaine Taupenot-Merme, celebrated for their pure, terroir-focused winemaking style.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-purple core with energetic crimson highlights at the rim.
  • Nose: Brooding, complex, and earthy. It opens with aromas of ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, and dark plums, accompanied by notes of damp forest earth, crushed iron, subtle game, and toasted wood spice.
  • Palate: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and broad. The entry brings a dense wave of dark berry sap that coats the palate, supported by firm, fine-grained Grand Cru tannins. Driven by vibrant limestone acidity, it finishes long, powerful, and mineral-driven.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–16°C. A gentle cellar-like chill focuses the dark berry fruit and keeps the firm structure smooth.
  • Decanting: A 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if opening early to allow the powerful aromatics and firm tannic structure to open. Cellar-worthy over the next 12 to 20 years.
  • Western Pairing: Prime ribeye steak, roasted venison, slow-braised beef short ribs, wild boar, or aged hard cheeses like Comté.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking duck, braised beef brisket, five-spice roasted pork, or wok-fried beef in black pepper sauce.
