From Tenuta delle Terre Nere on Sicily's Mount Etna, the Etna Rosso Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana 2021 is a refined blend of Nerello Mascalese (majority) and Nerello Cappuccio sourced from two pre-phylloxera parcels (over 140 years old) within the Calderara Sottana contrada at 600 meters elevation on volcanic soils rich in stones and ash that impart exceptional concentration and finesse. Hand-harvested grapes from the balanced 2021 vintage undergo alcoholic fermentation under controlled temperature and malolactic fermentation in large oak barrels, followed by aging in large and small oak barrels for 16 months and 1 month in steel to preserve purity and vibrancy. This iconic expression from Marco de Grazia's estate yields a translucent ruby wine with remarkable depth and longevity.

Tasting Notes A profound, intense Etna red from pre-phylloxera vines with smoky ash, rosemary, dried black cherries, sage, and cloves, delivering a velvety texture with ripe red and blue fruits, juicy acidity, and a long, mineral finish. The nose opens slowly with smoky intensity, evolving to ash, rosemary, dried black cherries, sage, and cloves. On the palate, it is velvety yet finessed, with a polished wave of ripe red and blue fruits across juicy acidity, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish.

Awards and Accolades The 2021 Prephylloxera La Vigna di Don Peppino Calderara Sottana earned 98 points from James Suckling for its impressive depth, complexity, and silky polished tannins.

Serving and Cellaring Serve at 16-18°C with 60 minutes of decanting to unfold aromas. Ideal with roasted game, truffle-infused dishes, or aged cheeses. Enjoy now through 2045, developing profound leather and earthy complexities over time.
