The 2021 Torbreck "RunRig" is a monumental Australian icon. Sourced from centenarian Barossa bush vines and co-fermented with a touch of Viognier, it reveals intoxicating aromas of black cherries, graphite, dried roses, cured meats, and dark cocoa. Full-bodied, dense, and remarkably silky, it marries immense power with fine architectural tannins and fresh balancing acidity, finishing with endless savory length.

Critical Recognition

Robert Parker's WA 99 pts
  • 99 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: The 2021 RunRig is an impossibly bright and vibrant wine, with intense power and structure to match the impermeable fruit. Not much more can be said of this wine other than that it came from a magnificent vintage that experienced healthy winter rains in the lead up to the growing season and dry conditions throughout the growing season. The wines have been lauded, and in the case of a wine like this, it is evident why. Like the 2018 vintage, you could drink this anytime, but one would counsel patience. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Highlights

  • Torbreck’s flagship Côte-Rôtie inspired masterwork, blending predominantly old-vine Shiraz (~98%) with a small parcel of Viognier (~2%) to lift aromatics and silkiness.
  • Sourced from six distinct historic vineyard parcels across prime Barossa sub-regions (Lyndoch, Rowland Flat, Moppa, Ebenezer, Light Pass, and Greenock), with vine ages ranging up to 160+ years.
  • Grown on deep red-brown earths, ironstone, and decomposed clay over limestone, producing low yields of exceptional physiological concentration and complex savory depth.
  • Matured for 30 months in fine-grained French oak barriques (approx. 50% new) with regular lees resting, delivering monumental structure with seamless textural polish.
  • From the benchmark, cool, and extended 2021 Barossa harvest; an aristocratic collector's wine built to evolve gracefully from 2026 through 2055+.

Tasting Notes

Opaque, saturated inky purple-black with ruby-violet hues, it unfurls a captivating, multi-layered perfume of black cherries, ripe mulberries, and wild blackberries, seamlessly intertwined with cured meats, graphite, dried rose petals, crushed black pepper, dark cocoa, and hints of black tea. The palate is monumental, deep, and supremely silky, delivering waves of concentrated dark fruit held firmly in place by seamless architectural tannins and fine natural acidity, concluding on an expansive, savory, and almost endless mineral finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in expansive Syrah or large Bordeaux stemware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1.5 to 2 hours prior to serving if enjoying in its youth to allow its dense fruit core and complex savory nuances to fully unwind. Prime drinking window 2026 through 2055+.
