Concentrated Black Bramble, Iron Ore, and High-Altitude Howell Mountain Power

The 2023 Turley "Dragon Vineyard" Howell Mountain Zinfandel is a monumental, muscular, and deeply structured single-vineyard red wine from one of Napa Valley's most extreme sites. Perched at 2,400 feet above sea level in red volcanic, iron-rich soil, these high-altitude vines yield a Zinfandel of incredible intensity and mineral drive. Brooding aromas of wild blackberries, black cherries, crushed iron ore, graphite, and wild mountain herbs lead into a full-bodied, densely packed palate framed by bold, architectural tannins and fresh natural acidity.

Terroir & Winemaking

  • Extreme High-Altitude Terroir: Planted at an astonishing 2,400 feet elevation, Dragon Vineyard sits at the highest point of Howell Mountain, well above the fog line. The thin, rocky, red volcanic soils force the vines to struggle, creating tiny, thick-skinned berries packed with concentrated dark fruit, firm mountain tannins, and distinct crushed-iron minerality.
  • Artisanal Turley Craftsmanship: Farmed organically and vinified with wild ambient yeasts. Turley carefully manages extraction to preserve the vineyard's ferocious mountain structure while maintaining pure varietal expression, aging the wine in neutral wood to let the unique Howell Mountain terroir shine through.

Highlights

  • 100% Zinfandel organically farmed at 2,400 feet elevation on Howell Mountain, Napa Valley.
  • A radiant 2023 release packed with wild blackberries, crushed iron ore, graphite, and wild sage.
  • Crafted by Turley Wine Cellars, offering one of the most powerful and age-worthy Zinfandels in California.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep garnet-black core with luminous dark purple reflections at the rim.
  • Nose: Brooding, mineral-driven, and complex. It opens with aromas of wild blackberries, black cherries, and plum preserves, accompanied by crushed iron, graphite, dried mountain sage, and white pepper.
  • Palate: Dry, full-bodied, and deeply structured. The entry brings a concentrated wave of dark berry sap that glides across chewy, architectural mountain tannins, supported by fresh acidity and an endlessly long, mineral-driven finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve slightly cool at 15–17°C to allow its dense texture and complex aromatics to uncoil gracefully.
  • Decanting: A generous 45-to-60 minute decant is recommended if opening young to let its mountain tannins soften. Cellar-worthy through 2038+.
  • Western Pairing: Prime dry-aged ribeye steak, roasted rack of lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef short ribs, or wild boar.
  • Asian Pairing: Dongpo braised pork belly, Xinjiang cumin lamb skewers, Mongolian beef, or wok-fried black pepper beef.
