Vilafonté Seriously Old Dirt 2022

From Vilafonté winery in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa, the Seriously Old Dirt 2022 is a refined blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 2% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Sourced from ancient vilafontes clay-gravel soils across Paarl and Western Cape vineyards, it’s hand-harvested and aged 18 months in used French oak barriques, offering a bright garnet-red hue with vibrant complexity.

Tasting Notes

A refined, vibrant red with fresh black fruit and spicy elegance, showcasing Western Cape’s ancient soils.
The nose reveals fresh plum, black raspberry, mulberry, and ripe strawberry, with hints of shaved nutmeg, dried sage, and vanilla. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and silky, with fresh acidity, soft tannins, and flavors of black fruit, spice, and a long, layered finish.

Awards and Accolades

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate "The Vilafonté 2022 Seriously Old Dirt pays homage to the wonders of South African geology based on, ahem, very old soils. These range from shale, decomposed granite, sandstone and other formations traced back one billion years and having seen little to no movement in the form of glaciation, volcanic events or earthquakes. So-called Vilafontes soils are some of the world's oldest documented soil types."

Food Pairings

Pair this red with Western dishes like roasted lamb or sharp cheddar to highlight its fruit and spice. For Chinese cuisine, try 京醬肉絲, 白切雞, 乾炒牛河, 廣東燒肉, 鹽焗雞, or 燒鵝 to complement its silky texture and spicy notes. Ideal for refined dinners or festive occasions.

Serving and Cellaring

Serve at 16°C with one hour of decanting to enhance aromas. Enjoy now or cellar until 2032 for added complexity. Explore our Western Cape collection for more Bordeaux blend classics.
