Expert Tasting Notes & Estate Reputation
- 94 Points – James Suckling: "What a wonderful interplay of citrus, stone fruit and fresh herb aromas. Very subtle chalky minerality that builds and builds at the long focused finish. Excellent aging potential! From the Hollenbrand site. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold."
- 94 Points – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Entirely from the Höllenbrand cru and from limestone topped by heavy clayey marls, vinified in two stücks and bottled 10 days before I tasted it in early July, the 2022 Gundersheimer Riesling 1G opens with an intense and dense, deep and flinty yet also still reductive bouquet of ripe and lush yellow fruits. Fresh and finessed on the first palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, pure, mineral and tensioned Riesling with fine tannins and an intense, citric-fresh and dramatic finish. It was certainly still nervous so soon after the bottling, but it is doubtlessly an impressive Höllenbrand. 12.3% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023."
- A Master of Biodynamics: Based in Westhofen within the Wonnegau district of Rheinhessen, Weingut Wittmann has been a registered wine-producing family since 1663. Fully organic since 1990 and biodynamic since 2004, winemaker Philipp Wittmann is widely acknowledged as one of the key figures who elevated dry German Riesling to global status, using large, cold-cellar foudres to cultivate exceptional texture and depth.
Highlights
- 100% Riesling sourced entirely from certified biodynamic village-level plots in Gundersheim, renowned for its steep limestone cliffs.
- Grown on heavy clay soils with a dense, solid limestone bedrock, imparting a robust structural chassis and prominent chalky minerality.
- Fermented spontaneously with wild vineyard yeasts and aged in neutral, large-format traditional oak casks (Stückfass and Doppelstück) to gently polish the texture without imparting wood flavors.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright pale straw with shimmering white gold edges.
- Nose: Clean, crisp, and high-toned, offering aromas of grapefruit skin, yellow apple, and wild lemon grass, underscored by flinty reduction and a deep limestone dust profile.
- Palate: Bone-dry, medium-bodied, and highly athletic. Layers of citrus oil and hard orchard fruit are carried by a firm, linear line of acidity. The mid-palate has an excellent, slightly chalky extract weight, resolving into a long, dry, and distinctly salty finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve chilled at 9–11°C to allow the structural limestone components and clean fruit to balance naturally.
- Decanting: A brief 15-to-20 minute decant helps the native yeast reduction dissipate and lets the compact mineral spine uncoil. Structured beautifully to cellar over the next 6–10 years.
- Western Pairing: An exceptional counterpart for pan-seared sea bass with capers, roasted pork cutlets, fresh razor clams, or a goat cheese tart.
- Asian & Cantonese Pairing: The high tension, dry extract, and saline finish act as a beautiful razor against rich seafood starches and gelatinous textures. It pairs spectacularly well with 蒜蓉粉絲蒸大蝦 (Steamed King Prawns with Garlic and Glass Noodles), 潮州凍蟹 (Chiu Chow Cold Crab), or classic 白切雞 (White Cut Chicken served with ginger-scallion oil).
