Ripe Blackcurrants, Dark Cocoa, Chinese Cedar, and Flagship Ningxia Grandeur

The 2020 Xige Estate N50 Red Blend is a flagship fine red from Ningxia’s Helan Mountain East Foothills. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Gernischt from old vines, it reveals opulent aromas of blackcurrant compote, ripe plums, cedar, and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, velvety, and profound, it wraps concentrated dark fruit around fine-grained, architectural tannins and fresh acidity, finishing long, savory, and impeccably polished.

Highlights

  • Flagship estate blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by mature Cabernet Gernischt (Carmenère) from select 20+ year-old vines.
  • Grown in the Dove Mountain (Gezi Shan) sub-zone of the Helan Mountain East Foothills in Ningxia, sitting at 1,100+ meters elevation on stony, gravelly-sand soils.
  • High-altitude sunshine and wide diurnal swings foster thick grape skins, concentrated anthocyanins, and pristine varietal purity while retaining vibrant natural balance.
  • Aged 12–14 months in select French oak barriques, providing fine structural polish, gentle vanilla, and spicy cedar nuances.
  • From the warm, dry 2020 harvest; prime drinking window now through 2036+.

Tasting Notes

Deep garnet-purple with an opaque core, it opens with pure, commanding aromas of blackcurrant compote, dark plums, and wild blackberries, seamlessly layered with dark cocoa, cedarwood, subtle clove, crushed river stones, and a delicate touch of Chinese dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied, multi-layered, and fleshy, enveloping ripe dark fruit in a dense framework of fine-grained, architectural tannins and balanced freshness, concluding on a persistent, clean, and warmly spiced savory finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 1 hour prior to serving to let its dense structure, cedar spice, and dark fruit harmonize. Prime drinking window now through 2036+.
