Blackcurrants, Cedar Spice, Dark Chocolate, and Helan Mountain Power

The 2021 Xige Estate N18 Red Blend is an impressive, modern Chinese fine wine from Ningxia’s Helan Mountain East Foothills. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Gernischt, it delivers aromas of ripe blackcurrants, mulberries, dark chocolate, and subtle Chinese cedar. Full-bodied, plush, and structured, it marries dense dark fruit with fine-grained tannins and balancing acidity, concluding on a long, polished, and savory finish.

Highlights

  • Signature Ningxia blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Gernischt (Carmenère) from mature 20+ year-old vines.
  • Estate grown at Xige Estate (西鸽酒庄) in the Dove Mountain sub-region of the Helan Mountain East Foothills, planted on stony, sandy gravel soils at 1,100 meters altitude.
  • Continental climate with intense high-altitude sunlight and extreme diurnal temperature shifts, yielding deep phenolic color and concentrated dark fruit while maintaining natural freshness.
  • Matured for 12 months in French oak barriques to polish tannins and impart seamless vanilla, toast, and spice notes.
  • From the stellar, dry 2021 Ningxia harvest; prime drinking window now through 2033+.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-purple with a dense core, it opens with pure, fragrant aromas of ripe cassis, black cherries, and mulberries, seamlessly layered with dark chocolate, espresso bean, cracked black pepper, dried mint, and cedar spice. The palate is full-bodied, rich, and supple, enveloping dark berry fruit in a bed of architectural, fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity, culminating in a persistent, savory, and delicately toasted finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at 16–18°C in large Bordeaux glassware.
  • Decanting: Decant for 45 minutes to 1 hour to allow its oak integration and rich fruit layers to fully unfold. Best enjoyed now through 2033+.
