Collection: Castello di Ama
History
Castello di Ama was revived in 1976 by four Roman families who restored the abandoned medieval hamlet and its 55-hectare estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, between Siena and Florence. Agronomist Marco Pallanti joined as winemaker in 1982, driving quality through modern vineyard techniques; Lorenza Sebasti became CEO in 1993, solidifying its rise with her father's founding vision. Today, the 260-hectare property produces ~320,000 bottles annually from Sangiovese-focused sites across valleys like San Lorenzo and Bellavista, blending Etruscan roots with contemporary art commissions.
Viticulture Philosophy
Vines thrive on galestro and alberese soils at 420-527m elevation across four valleys, with dense planting, low yields, and organic/sustainable practices certified by international standards to capture Chianti's mineral freshness and structure. Emphasis on single-vineyard crus like San Lorenzo (for Gran Selezione) and Bellavista honors micro-terroirs, fostering biodiversity amid Tuscany's continental climate.
Winemaking Techniques
Marco Pallanti vinifies Sangiovese with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by malolactic and 12-18 months aging in French oak (varying new wood by cuvée) for elegance and balance; blends incorporate 5-20% Merlot or other natives. Gran Seleziones like San Lorenzo age longer for complexity; minimal intervention yields vibrant Chianti Classico from villages to Riserva levels.
Critics and Journalist Praises
Castello di Ama benchmarks Chianti Classico finesse, with Wine Spectator awarding 97 points to San Lorenzo Gran Selezione for "silky" cherry, herb, and mineral depth; James Suckling scores Bellavista 96 for precision. Critics hail Pallanti-Sebasti synergy for world-class Tuscan purity, rivaling Piedmont and Bordeaux, with consistent 95+ acclaim.
