Vibrant, Citrus-Driven, and Beautifully Crisp

Taking its name from the Māori word for "youngest child," the Potiki Chardonnay represents the vibrant, more approachable side of Ata Rangi's white wine portfolio. Sourced from younger vines across the estate's Martinborough blocks, the 2024 vintage is brilliantly energetic, offering an enticing bouquet of white peach, pink grapefruit, and lemon blossom. Medium-bodied and purposefully crafted with less new oak than the flagship Craighall, it highlights purity and freshness, delivering a crisp, mouth-watering palate underscored by a subtle, creamy almond texture and a clean, mineral finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling [97] pts
Jasper Morris [93] pts
  • 97 Points - James Suckling "This single-vineyard chardonnay shows a trendy flinty character that gives it lots of mineral and crushed stone aromas. Medium-bodied with a linear and racy finish of sliced apples, pears and just a hint of wood. Fresh and lively. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
  • 93 Points ★★★★☆ - Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy "The nose is shy and needs time in the glass to reveal stonefruit, lemon butter and ripe apple. A mouthwateringly vibrant line of acidity give a lift to the palate and there's a powdery phenolic layer contributing a textural finish. A quieter wine that will reward cellaring. Alcohol 13.00%. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2025."
  • The "Potiki" Philosophy: In Māori, "Potiki" translates directly to "youngest child." True to its name, this Chardonnay is sourced from the estate's younger vine plantings across the Martinborough Terrace. These vines naturally yield fruit with brilliant, zesty acidity and forward aromatics, creating a wine that is beautifully expressive in its youth.
  • Artisan Winemaking: To preserve the inherent freshness of the younger vines, winemaker Helen Masters limits the use of new oak, preferring older puncheons and large-format foudres. A portion of the wine typically undergoes malolactic fermentation to add a touch of creamy breadth to the mid-palate, seamlessly balancing the wine's vibrant, citrus-driven core.

Highlights

  • 100% Chardonnay crafted from younger vines grown on the free-draining alluvial gravels of Martinborough.
  • Farmed with certified organic practices, reflecting Ata Rangi's unwavering commitment to sustainability and soil health.
  • Designed for immediate pleasure and approachability, offering a fresher, more fruit-forward alternative to the estate's flagship Craighall Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Clear, pale lemon-yellow with bright green hues.
  • Nose: Vibrant, fresh, and instantly appealing. It jumps out of the glass with zesty aromas of pink grapefruit, white peach, and lemon blossom, layered delicately with hints of crushed almonds and subtle flint.
  • Palate: Bone-dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully crisp. A surge of energetic citrus and orchard fruit defines the palate, supported by a gentle, creamy texture from partial malolactic fermentation. Lively acidity carries the wine into a clean, refreshing, and mineral-laced finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve nicely chilled at 10–12°C. This temperature perfectly highlights the wine's vibrant citrus profile and crisp, mouth-watering energy.
  • Decanting: No decanting is necessary. The Potiki is wonderfully expressive right out of the bottle and is crafted to be enjoyed in its vibrant youth, though it will comfortably drink well for the next 3 to 5 years.
  • Western Pairing: Lemon-herb roast chicken, pan-seared white fish, fresh goat cheese salads, or creamy pasta primavera.
  • Asian Pairing: Steamed garoupa with ginger and scallions (清蒸石斑魚), salt-and-pepper calamari, or delicate dim sum such as har gow (蝦餃).
