Terroir, History & Acclaim
Critical Recognition:
James Suckling [94] pts
- 94 Points - James Suckling: "Perfumed and pretty, showing the quality of the beautiful 2024 vintage. Aromas of sliced oranges and strawberries. Some crushed stones. Medium body, firm tannins and crunchy fruity at the end. Linear and bright. Drink now."
- The Younger Vines Advantage: While Ata Rangi's flagship Pinot Noir relies on the oldest vines on the estate, the "Crimson" cuvée is explicitly sourced from younger parcels (typically 10 to 20 years old) on the deep alluvial gravels of the Martinborough Terrace. These younger vines naturally produce fruit that is more brightly expressive, forward, and aromatically open in its youth.
- Wine with a Purpose: First produced twenty years ago, the Crimson label was created to support Project Crimson, a charitable conservation trust working to replant and preserve New Zealand's native red-flowering pohutukawa and rata trees. It is farmed under the same rigorous organic practices as the estate's top-tier wines, offering exceptional pedigree at a highly accessible level.
Highlights
- 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from younger, highly expressive vines grown on the free-draining gravels of the Martinborough Terrace.
- Farmed with certified organic practices, reflecting Ata Rangi's legendary commitment to natural viticulture.
- Proceeds help support the preservation of native New Zealand trees through the Project Crimson charitable trust.
Tasting Notes
- Appearance: Bright, brilliant ruby core with vibrant crimson highlights at the rim.
- Nose: Perfumed, highly aromatic, and immediately inviting. It jumps out of the glass with pretty scents of fresh strawberries, sliced orange peel, and dark cherry, underpinned by a focused crushed-stone minerality and very gentle spice.
- Palate: Bone-dry, medium-bodied, and beautifully linear. A wash of vibrant, crunchy red fruit dominates the palate, supported by a firm but highly approachable tannin structure. The acidity is crisp and energetic, leading into a bright, clean, and delicious finish.
Serving Suggestion
- Temperature: Serve slightly chilled at 14–15°C. This cooler temperature perfectly accentuates the wine's vibrant, crunchy red fruit and zippy energy.
- Decanting: A brief 15-to-30 minute decant is all that is required. Unlike the more muscular estate Pinot Noir, Crimson is specifically crafted to be delightfully expressive and ready to drink in its youth, though it can happily age for 5 to 8 years.
- Western Pairing: Herb-roasted chicken, classic charcuterie boards, seared tuna steaks, or grilled pork chops with a cherry glaze.
- Asian Pairing: Cantonese crispy skin roast pork (燒肉), pan-fried dumplings, or mildly spiced stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts.
