High Energy, Mineral-Driven, and Crunchy

A brilliant exploration of Martinborough terroir, the 2021 Kotinga Pinot Noir represents a distinct contrast to Ata Rangi's flagship estate bottling. Sourced from a single vineyard on Puruatanga Road planted entirely to Dijon clones (115, 667, and 777), this cuvée is defined by its incredibly high energy and crunchy red fruit. It boasts an intensely perfumed nose of ripe strawberries, pink roses, and cherry, underscored by a profound, graphite-like minerality. To preserve this vivid purity, the wine is aged in a large oak foudre rather than traditional small barriques, resulting in a medium-to-full-bodied Pinot Noir with beautifully supple tannins, fluid acidity, and a long, intriguing finish.

Terroir, History & Acclaim

Critical Recognition:
James Suckling [97] pts
Wine Advocate [95] pts
  • 97 Points - James Suckling: "Perfumed with ripe strawberries and fresh flowers, like pink roses, as well as some of their stems and leaves. Black mushrooms and hints of mulch. Medium- to full-bodied with polished and refined tannins that give a fine velvety texture and a long and flavorful finish. Stony undertone at the end. Hard not to drink if you like crunchy, young and serious pinot, but try to be patient. Drinkable but better in three or four years. Better than 2020. Screw cap."
  • 95 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2021 Kotinga Pinot Noir leads with clove and ferrous, star anise and pomegranate. The mid-palate is sapid and intense and walks a tightrope of fleshy and tense. It has an energy that sits on the precipice of pleasure and pain, or an intensity akin to the focus required right in that second before you catch a ball. It's an utterly engaging wine. This is the best part about Pinot—intrigue and satisfaction. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."
  • The McCrone Clay: Planted in 2001 using a mix of clones (including Abel, Dijon, and Clone 5), the McCrone Vineyard sits just moments away from Ata Rangi’s home block. However, beneath the typical Martinborough gravels lies a distinct seam of compact clay. This clay retains moisture and coolness, directly translating into a Pinot Noir that is rounder, broader, and more textural than its gravel-grown siblings.
  • Artisan Viticulture: Farmed organically under the meticulous care of the Ata Rangi team, the winemaking focuses on translating the soil's voice. Incorporating around 40% whole-cluster fermentation, the wine extracts complex herbal and spice notes, ensuring the powerful dark fruit is perfectly framed by the site's naturally dense, velvety tannins.

Highlights

  • 100% Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from the McCrone Vineyard in Martinborough, planted in 2001.
  • Unique clay-based soils yield a Pinot Noir that is distinctly broader, denser, and more savory than the classic Ata Rangi estate bottling.
  • Farmed with certified organic practices, reflecting Ata Rangi's pioneering commitment to sustainability.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep, brooding ruby core with a slightly darker, more opaque center than the estate Pinot Noir.
  • Nose: Intensely savory, earthy, and complex. It opens with striking aromas of black plum, dark cherry, and bramble, seamlessly interwoven with damp forest floor, black truffle, and dark roasted spices.
  • Palate: Bone-dry, medium-to-full-bodied, and deeply textural. The clay soils lend a broad, mouth-coating weight to the dark fruit, perfectly structured by dense, velvety tannins. It builds expansively across the palate, leading into a long, earthy, and highly sophisticated finish.

Serving Suggestion

  • Temperature: Serve at a cellar-cool 15–16°C. Allowing the wine to remain slightly cool keeps the powerful dark fruit precise and highlights the intricate earthy notes.
  • Decanting: Given the immense structural density of the McCrone site and the concentration of the 2019 vintage, a 1-to-2 hour decant is highly recommended. This is a powerful, architectural wine built to cellar beautifully over the next 15–20 years.
  • Western Pairing: Herb-crusted rack of lamb, roasted venison saddle with blackberry jus, slow-braised beef short ribs, or wild mushroom and truffle risotto.
  • Asian Pairing: Peking Duck (北京烤鴨), slow-braised pork belly (東坡肉), or tender stir-fried beef tenderloin with black pepper and soy.
